Show What to Buy For Valentines Bay? Edible Undies? by Brenda Lee Jones f' tq Forum staff writer Valentine' Day is celebrated as a festival of romance and affection. Customs in the celebration vary from country to country, but the theme seems to remain the same. It is a day for hearts, cupids, flowers and chocolates. The colors red, pink and white take on a whole new meaning, one filled with fairy tale views of sweethearts in i j I i. 1S-- V $ ! tr ! j V i a love. Historians know little about early celebrations of Valentine's Day, and many disagree about the actual origination. Many believe the day is in remembrance of St. Valentine, who was beheaded by the Romans on Palatine Hill. Others believe it had to do with the birds mating habits! Children around the world enjoy the day by making decorative boxes so they can receive valentines from fellow classmates and by eating lots of candy! According to a Forum questionnaire, many Westminster students have no plans for celebration on Feb. 14, and some even dislike the holiday. Alee Pepper, a freshman majoring in communications, said she has never given or received a Valentines Day gift and has not purchased any either! Another who wishes to remain anonymous, said, I hate Valentines Day. Probably because Ive never had a boyfriend on Valentines Day. Many resource books in the W. T. Nightingale Memorial Libraiy have come from private collections and were donated for student use. In the archive section of the Westminster Libraiy there are many books dating to the early 1800s. Many of the books have leather-toole- d bindings and gold leaf," said Oresta Esquibel, associate librarian for public services. The books in the archive section are available for students research. Some can be signed out, but others must be used inside the library under supervision, according to Esquibel. The archive section contains a small collection of old and some rare books, many from early Westminster days. There is a strong collection of books on Mormonism, presumably obtained by the early Utah Presbyterian Church. Im not certain if they are really books," said anti-Morm- primary pupils, it was called the Collegiate Institute. In 1902, the name was changed to Westminster and has grown from a class of 10 to a group of buildings housing 1,000 in 1975." In addition, the archive section contains some rare books from private collections donated to the college. A book about women in the Civil War was printed just two years after the war ended according to Esquibel. There are some old editions of the Encyclopedia Britannica. I would guess that they are probably not rare, but they are unique." Please help by depositing your aluminum cans in the red Coke" barrels found in numerous places on campus. The collection s existence is probably in light of the Presbyterians struggle as they came up against Mormonism." The history of Westminster college preserved in the archive section includes correspondence files of the presidents and Boards ofTrustees of the college, yearbooks from 1918 to 1987,backissues of the college catalogs, Ellipsis, Forum and their predecessors. Emil Nyman, the archivist who spent a great deal of time cataloging the materials on Westminster, also wrote a book entitled, A Short History of Westminster College: The First Century 1875-1975- ." He wrote, The first academic classes were held in the old Presbyterian Church in the spring of 1875. However, the archive section is not used very often. It houses theses for the masters of education program.
