Show Utah Opera to Present Cosi Fan Tutte by Calvin L. Harrington Forum staff writer Utah Opera commemorates the 200th anniversary of Mozarts death by present-- i nghis masterpiece, Cosi Fan Tutte at the Capitol Theatre. Cosi fan tutte literally means all women are like that. This opera is a dazzling collection of comic infidelity, impulsive wagering andmistaken identities. The three remaining performance dates are Jan. 23 and 25 at 8 p.m. and a 2 p.m. matinee on Jan. 27. The location of the opera is Naples, Italy, during the 18th century. A cynical old bachelor, Don Alfonso (bass) makes a k wager with two young officers, Ferrando (tenor) and Guglielmo (baritone). The wager is that, like other women, their sweethearts, two sisters, cannot be trusted within a period. Don Alfonso later tells the two sisters, Dorabella and Fiordiligi (soprano) that their lovers have been called to war. As they depart, they all vow fidelity. The two men come back later, disguised as two rich, attractive Albanians. They are introduced by Don Alfonso with the aid of the young ladies maid, Despina (soprano). Unrecognized, each man pursues the others girl with surprising, hilarious results. It can certainly be argued that the story is chauvinistic, but it is often pointed out that Mozart was concerned with the humanity of his characters. It is love, not chauvinism, that triumphs in the end. Most critics agree that Mozarts music for Cosi Fan Tutteisas fine as thatoFThe Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute, and Don Giovanni (all of which have been produced by Utah Opera in previous seasons). In America it has been called All Women Do Thus; in England it was once called The Marriage Contract, The School for Lovers and Ti t for Tat; in Germany it has been called Who Won the Bet? and The Girls Revenge; in Denmark it has appeared as Flight From the Covenant; and in France, believe it or not, as The Chinese Laborer (dont ask me universally agreed among eminent music critics that Cosi Fan Tutte is the most subtle and modern of the four, with its probing of human affection and allegiance. Everything in Cosi Fan Tutte balances and contrasts: the two sisters, the two lovers, the maid, the mistress, the old man and the boys. The music is awesome and prominent critics also marvel at how Mozart underlined every platitude with parody, every sham with truth. The film is a surprisingly strikingly artistic event. Many people, myself among them, had wondered if it was possible for Mel Gibson (Lethal Weapon, Lethal Weapon II) to pull off a believable Prince of rendition of the Denmark, Hamlet. Not only has he done it, he has made the character something that modern youth, largely unversed in Shakespearean style, could relate to and well-don- i - V V For 7. 328-FIL- Men's Basketball, University of Utah vs. Colorado State. There is the moral question of the proper length of the time ofmourning from the onset, Hamlet being unable to adjust to life without his father, or to adjust to his mothers remarriage so soon. At the same time, he cant engage in full frontal confrontation with Gertrude (Glenn Close), because he cant bring himself to hurt her. He is a classic example of the wonderful son, duly doted over by aloving mother. This all falls apart, however, when Hamlet meets with the doomed shade of his father (Paul Scofield), forced to wander the earth at 22, 1991 January 24 information call follow.
