Box 520614, SLC Jazz, Univ. of Utah and Emery High Farnsworth 84152-061- 4 By Ron The increasingly anemic offense of the Utah Jazz cost them their third road loss In a row. Jerry Sloan's defensive oriented strategy has helped the Jazz to their best year ever, but recently the team's offense has struggled in losing three of four games. After a tough double overtime loss to Detroit, the Jazz looked bad on the road in losing by 20 points to Sacramento. Because of the NBA's brilliant scheduling, Utah had three days off after the loss to the Kings before playing the Dallas Mavericks in the Salt Palace, and then had to turn around and play in Phoenix the very next day. Dallas almost assured themselves an early summer by losing. Portland has opened a two game lead over Dallas for the final playoff spot In the Western Conference. The Mavericks have been hurt this season by the loss of Roy Tarpley (drugs), James Donaldson (knee injury) and the addition of Adrian Dantley (attitude). After the relatively easy win over the Mavericks, the Jazz ran into serious trouble in Veteran's Coliseum against the Suns. The first half held some promise for the Jazz as they took a 55-5- 2 lead into die locker room. Both teams scored in streaks in the half; the Jazz had a 23-- 9 run in the first quarter which was answered by Phoenix scoring 12 of the last 15 points in the quarter. For Utah, Thurl Bailey had 15 of his 28 total points in the first half while Armon Gilliam led Phoenix with 10 points and 10 , rebounds. Five of Gilliam's rebounds were on the offensive end. The Jazz lead dwindled and was lost in the third quarter as the Suns shone. The last lead for the Jazz was 74-7- 3 as Tom Chambers came alive for Phoenix and scored 12 of his total 30 points in the third. In the fourth quarter, Utah climbed within one point on three different occasions but could never get over the top. Kevin Johnson (32 points) and Eddie Johnson (21 points) led the Phoenix free . throw derby to put the game out of reach. The final margin was 1 Utah's only point production came from Karl Malone (29), Thurl Bailey (28) and John Stockton (23). Once again, the tandem of Bobby Hansen (5 points) and Darrell Griffith (6 points) failed to contribute. 14-10- 4. off-gua- rd John Stockton played his usual spectacular game, dishing 16 assists, pilfering four steals and grabbing seven rebounds in addition to his 23 points. The Jazz may have put themselves out of contention for the second best record In the West as Phoenix moves two full games ahead in the standings. Phoenix has a much easier schedule for their final nine games than does Utah. Utah's magic number for clinching the Midwest Division title remains at six. Denver has tied Houston for second place behind the Jazz, so any combination of six Utah wins or Denver or Houston losses will give the title to Utah. win-at-all-co- "I" in team," said Rick a Majerus in Tuesday news conference announcing his appointment as head basketball coach of the University of Utah. "You Just don't hear about that too often." In a climax to months of conflict between Navarrette and Pima's Board of Governors, the board suspended Navarrette March 15, claiming he lied about his academic credentials. But board ' member Karleen Kaltenmark, who led the probe of Navarrette's diplomas, apparently had some credential problems of her own. On a prior employment application to the college, Kaltenmark is listed as having a 8 Forum bachelor's degree. In response to the scarcity of postgraduate diplomas on the campus, a local bar has begun giving out free "master's degrees" to Pima students. Others are taking the matter more seriously. "There is a fear of the college falling apart," said student leader Greg Bond. "These people are playing games with our educations," added Lorene another student who is circulating a petition asking that three of Pimas four board members resign. Faculty, staff and alumni groups also have started petitions asking board members to step down. The state attorney general has Joined the fray, targeting Kaltenmark. A civil suit accused her of living outside the district she is supposed to represent on Pima's board. And news accounts contain accusations that Kaltenmark practices witchcraft. "It's okay to be a witch," said Carole dc Senneville, editor of The Aztec Press, the student paper the board of Governors attempted to force to print more "positive news" in February, 1988.
