Im here to see that is what they get. programs in those areas. Although Gershowitz has had extensive experience in teaching, he does not plan to dofco at Westminster immediately. He has adream that at some point in the future he will teach a May term course on urban government and urban politics which would include travel to an urban center. When asked what he thinks of Westminster and Salt Lake, Gershowitz responded, I love it here. I think that Salt Lake is one of the most attractive and livable cities that I have ever r to the Academic Vice President Michael Gershowitz is an experienced photographer who even took time out of his busy schedule to give the photo director a few helpful hints. (Thanks, KJ) Gershowitz states that he was interested in the position at Westminster because he saw it as an outstanding opportunity to do some things that had interested him for a long time. These areas of interest included faculty development, creating mew degree programs and new majors, and working intensively to increase grant support for special projects. Gershowitz says that it has not been determined what new degrees or majors will be added at Westminster. However, he refers to an article in the September 7 issue of U.S. News and World Report to suggest some possibilities. The article suggests that of the 10 fas- -' test growing occupations from 1986 to 2000, five of those are in health related areas, and three are in computer fields and related technology. Gershowitz states that he would like to take a close look at increasing Westminster . of 3.3. The second set, the soft criteria, are a written statement from the prospective honors student explaining his or her desire to participate in the program,- the recommendation of his or her. admission counselor, and, if possible, an interview with two members of the honors faculty. . To remain in the program, students must maintain a 3.25 GPA overall, and a 3.0 GPA overall in honors courses. It is to relieve the academic stress that the honors courses give us, said LaDawn president of the honors society.' Ha-glun- - d, Changes in the academics of the program presented to an honors curriculum committee, the full faculty, and the board of trustees in the Four Year Honors Degree Proposal." - will be . established by Popich and of the faculty and members contributing states that in order to be awarded an Honors degree, students must successfully complete 38 hours in honors courses. The hours would be broken down into 32 hours worth of Liberal education courses; eight hours of Honors 300 level seminars at two credits each, and nine to twelve hours of individual prograrrf based Honors course credit. The minimum four year honors degree requirements would then be as follows, according to the proposal: At least 24 hours taken in The proposal, y, the guise of honors 200 courses; completion of a senior project for three hours of credit; an additional 11 hours selected from honors 300 courses; honors independent study and, by special arrangement, honors credit from upper. division courses in the students major program of study. Popich feels that more students will enroll in the . natural science and mathematics courses1 in the years to follow because 'the honors schedule will be more flexible, allowing students more discrepancy about when they can take the classes. Admission to the honors program is based on two sets of criteria, according to the academic catalog. The first set, the hard criteria, consists of ACTSAT scores and high school grade point average. The minimum ACT or SAT scores are a 25 composite for the ACT, a 1040 combined score for the SAT. The high school GPA should be a minimum , Described as an ambitious program by Popich, the honors series has been well received by students and faculty involved. Dave Humphreys, sophomore honors society treasurer, believes the enthusiasm of the students can be seen in the formation of the symposium society. The students joined together to form this extracurricular group because they are enthusiastic about honors, he said. Positive feelings about the courses also comes from student relations with their professors. Tracy Anderson, sophomore, said she enjoys having two teachers for one subject.- You get two different sides it is much she said. more challenging thinking-wise,- " ... Sophomore Grace Harris agrees. It is a lot more interesting this way, she said of the team-taughonors classes. ht Currently, according to the Westminster 1987-8- 8 Academic Catalog, students would receive an honors certificate after completing an eight course sequence of honors classes. The new proposal would make it possible to obtain a degree for certain amounts of Popich emphasized how well the honors program is doing when its newness to the school is taken into consideration. There is still a lot of work to be done, but as far as the involved students and faculty are concerned, the program is moving with success and will most likely continue to do so. |
