Everyone expected me to be a tea and crumpets type entertainer, when in fact, I was a wine and cheese lady. It took sometime for them to accept my style, but I decided that I just had to be myself and do what I felt good doing, she said. All the luncheons, Christmas parties, receptions, and dinners prepared her for her husbands next assignment the presidency of Westminster College. Some of her duties at g Westminster include coordinating in events, participating many campus activities, and preparing and cleaning up after dinners, parties, and receptions held at the Dicks home. During the two years they have lived in Salt Lake, Dick has been actively involved in a number of community affairs. She is curently the chair of the program development committee, and on the Board of the Y.W.C.A. Mayor Palmer DePaulis called last November to ask her to serve on his task force on Salt Lake Citys homeless. The committee consists of approximately 25-3- 0 members who are clergy and other prominent people in the community. We study the problems of the homeless, and what we can do to dissolve them, she said. She is also a member of the Salt Lake Council of Women, the Westminster Student Life Committee, an honorary member of the Westminster Womans Board, and a member of P.E.O., which is a private education organization supporting higher education for women. As an only child, Dick grew up in Buffalo, New York, and met her husband while working as an administrative assistant to the vice president of public relations at State University of New My thing is public relations and fundraising, she said. You always have to keep your eyes open for new sources and contacts for the college. These social events help keep those relationships strong, Dick added. Chuck was working as the assistant to the public relations vice president. Since we both worked for the same boss, we were together a lot, and the relationship just blossomed, she said. "Chuck is the person in charge, she said. "My job is to back him one hundred percent, and to support him in as many ways as I can. Dick feels it is important to remember faculty and staff members birthdays, special occasions, and other significant dates. She always functions in such a professional and efficient manner. I guess you could say shes somewhat of a superwoman. In her spare time Dick enjoys Mexican cooking, reading U.S. and Russian history, doing macrame, canning, gardening, and taking care of their two cocker spaniels, Edna and Freck- no exception. As a newlywed in her late twenties, she was first introduced to the duties of a first lady in 1976, when she accompanied her husband to Centenary College to accept his presidency there. When asked what the future holds for her and her husband, Dick replied, Chuck will someday retire. I may take the opportunity to go back to school and pursue my own career, since I was never able to attend college. I feel its very important for women to have their own interests and careers.
