Padilla and Sharp also served as RAs this year. According to Jackie Ilaus, director of residentdirectorof Hogle Hall, the applicants for RA must have a2.25 grade point standaverage or higher and have sophomore ' to in fall order qualify. ing by next Haus said the process of applying includes an informational meeting, a group process of planning activities and personal interviews. For the returning RAs Haus said the process of selection was more stringent than that for the d RAs; it included self evaluation and additional interviews. Training for the new RAs begins in May term with additional training a week prior to the opening of the resident hall next fall. Haus also stated tha the RAs receive ongoing training in the form of a weekly meeting with the other RAs plus a meeting once a week with Haus. cam-puslifea- newly-selecte- The RAs main responsibility, Haus said, is to assist me in the supervision and operation of the residence hall. Haus also said the RAs are each responsible for two social and two educa- tional programs per semester. The RAs are also actively involved in creative discipline methods, said Haus. Other RA responsibilities include maintenance of the resident hall building, working with the hall council on programs, spending one weekend a month and one night each week on duty and acting as coun-- . selors, advisors and friends to the students. In return for their services, Haus said the RAs receive free room and board. The rooms are single rooms and include a telephone free of service charge. Haus said she is pleased with this years RAs because they have, maintained the image that they are there to help, not just little policemen walking around." She hopes to maintain this image next year. Padilla enjoys being RA because, you learn something every day and its a great challenge helping the residents. Rice said he wanted to become an RA because, I like planning things and I get along well with people and like helping people out. Forum 3 |
