Show Westminster College of Salt Lake City Greece Out; Mexico in May Term Expedition Changes Course by Tammy Armantrout As a result of the increasing number of terrorist attacks on Americans in Europe and the Mediterranean, Westminster College has canMay Term tour of celed its Greece. long-schedul- Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences Stephen Baar said, "Because of increasingly tense global situations, Westminster College cant assume the responsibility of placing students or instructors in such a potentially dangerous situation. Susan Cottier, associate professor of History and one of the tours leaders, said she was both disappointed and relieved by the administrations decision to cancel the Greek trip. The most recent episode," she added, referring to the bombing of a TWA airliner, suggests that security isnt what everyone has been telling us it is. Cottier and Kay Kuzminski, associate professor of Art and the tours other leader, held an April 7 meeting for tour members to inform them of the decision and to announce that an alternative trip to Mexico may be scheduled if enough people are interested. The tour to Mexico would last 18 days and the cost would be approximately $1,100. In order to get this price on the tour Cottier stressed, reservations would need to be made almost immediately so anyone interested in that tour should contact her right away. If scheduled, tour members will visit what Cottier termed the former colonial showcases: San Migule de Allende, Guanajaato, Taxco, Villa Hermosa and Vera Cruz. The educational emphasis would be on the history of Mexico and Indian art. Concert Inaugurates Symphony Concert of Hypnotism was recently sponsored by Campus Life. Those receiving honorary degrees at this year's ceremony will be: President Gordon B. Hinckley of the LDS Church; Mr. Spencer F. Eccles, president and chairman of First Security Corporation; Professor Ralph V. Backman, special assistant to the academic vice president at Westminster; and Frank Layden, general manager and coach of the Utah Jazz. Coach Layden will also be a featured speaker at the ceremony. Approximately 200 graduates are expected to participate in this years ceremony, with the majority receiving bachelor of science degrees, according to Karen Hendry, administrative assistant to the dean of students. Hendry also indicated that there would be 22 graduates from the Masters in Education program and 16 graduates from the Masters in Management Program. The Alta High School Band has been invited to perform in this years ceremony The band has an outstanding reputation in the area, and the ceremony provides an opportunity for the development of good public relations between the college and Alta High School students. In keeping with tradition, the Salt Lake Scots Bagpipe Band will play during the processional. Some controversy surrounds the ceremony this year due to conspicuous absence of the Baccalaureate Ceremony. Hendry explained that the decision not to have the ceremony was made because an adequate facility was not available. The intent this year is to honor the graduates at the commencement and then follow with a more extensive reception afterward, according to Claudine Wilcox, secretary to the college president. The reception will be held in the plaza, east pf the Shaw Center. Another traditional part of the ceremony is the appearance of the symbolic college mace, exhibiting the Westminster seal and shield. The mace will be carried by Principal Faculty Marshall, Jay Lees. This years commencement promises to be quite an affair. As Wilcox put it, There is something to be said for pomp and circumstance, the ceremony will be something for the graduates to remember."
