Show April 5. 1S85 Page 5 Forum arcs Cl esatertaiinimsujt Minsk for Varnotas Lkteoniriig Palates by Chris Bertagnole Not (technically) a new release any more, Metallicas fine October release. Ride the Lightxing is without doubt an LP worth attention. When Ride the Lightning: sold 250, (XX) copies on an independent label. Mega Force, Elektra took note and signed the LA. heavy metal quartet Now to many, the mention of metal makes stomachs queasy. But even my mom found Fade to Black listenabie. She had trouble with the song "Fight Fire with Fire. This one is a bit harsh as it is a marriage of hard core punk and the fiercest metal which is blended to become the most threatening song there i3. Ride the Lightning is a haunting song about one nearing death by the electric chair. The emotions of fear and frustration are so well written into this song that it makes death preferable to the fear of dying. The best song on the record, and probably anti-nucle- ar the best metal song in existence, is For Whom the Bell Tolls. This song is a look at war from the view of he for whom the bell tolls. Heavy metal in general involves the worst lyrics in the world. However, this is not the case with Metallica. Not only can they write great lyrics, but Metallica writes the most powerful and exciting music one can imagine. If you have any tolerance for hard rock, turn ye therefore to Metallica! Another album which is not exactly hot off the press; but is as hot as one could hope for is U2a Unforgettable Fire, the fifth album from this Irish band. U2 is the one band that no one can dislike, though they have never received much attention (perhaps they arent pretty enough?); they have always had a following. Originally produced by Steve Lillywhite, who helped develop the bands style, Unforgettable Fire finds them with producer (and musical wiseman) Brian Eno. The essence of the band is the same. Echoey and atmospheric but mostly soulful. . . . Evem Mona! Nothing about U2 is traditional, but most unique is the clean deliverance of sheer energy while singing songs of love. Real love. Bad on the B side of the record is the most heart touching thing since Roxy Musics Flesh & Blood LP. Play that one for Burn, for guys pushing 40, this is pretty potent. The Firms album doesnt shine as brightly. It is near Bad Company (Paul Rogers vocals), but what ever happened to Jimmy Page? Not bad, but not a raver. Last, and least. Mountain is back from the grave. Anyone with a shovel could find' a place for this. It isnt even a good Frisbee. So we can end on a positive note, Simple Minds single "Dont You (forget about me) is the song of the year. It comes from the soundtrack of the Breakfast Club which has quite someone you love! And more about new stuff (that again isnt but this really is): revivial records. This reformation (or rising of the dead) is not the years best news. Though Deep Purple isn't the same powerhouse they were in the full glory days. Perfect Strangers is actually not too bad a record. While not as awesome as say Fireball or new, a bit to offer.
