Show WESTERN MINING GAZETTEER. The SIERRA NEVADAS ASSESSMENT. San Francisco Post of the 20th says: The Sierra IMPRISONED MINERS. Neva- da assessment naturally caused, and is still causing much indignation among outside holders, who realize that something like 25 per share has been levied upon them since an ore body was found in the mine two years ago. And after this ore body had been partially developed at great expense it was found by survey that most of it belonged to the Union Consolidated Mining Company. The present assessment, we are told, was levied to restore to the Union Company the value of the ore d which was at times extracted, south of the line between the mines, and milled. The value of the ore, together with the accumulated interest, amounts to about $81,-00The remainder of the 200,000 assessment just levied is to be devoted, we are assured by the officials, to the further development of the mine. For the sake of the stockholders it is hoped that the future work of development will be carried on so far north of the line that should another ore body be found in Sierra Nevada, the Union Consolidated Company will have no possible show to place its hands on it. The inside people who run the Sierra Nevada Company must have known a week or more ago, when the stock was booming at $19 per share, d and an public was absorbing it like hot cakes, that such an assessment would be levied. Theyv must also have comprehended the natural effect that such an assessment would have on the market. It is, therefore, reasonable to assume that the stock was sold heavily by the knowing ones, who now have an opportunity to replenish their store at greatly reduced newly-establishe- 0. over-excite- rates. The Virginia Chronicle of the 25th says: Yesterday noon an accident occurred at the llale & Norcross that gave rise to numerous rumors of strikes, etc., during the day. The giraffe was being lowered in the incline, and about 200 feet from the level of the mine, it ran off the track top, near the 1,500-foand stopped.' It was impossible to lower it any further, and it was found very difficult to get it back on the rails. There were twenty men at the bottom, who had gone down at seven in the morning. As there was no way of hoisting them until the giraffe could be righted, tliev were obliged to stay down. They were kept supplied with air through the pipes, and as the heat is not very great at that point, the men did not suffer. About 2 oclock this morning the miners became weary through long waiting, and not knowing when relief would come, all but three started to climb up the incline from level; Up to the 2,200 the incline is cool, but above that it is extremely hot, as all the hot air comes through the 2,200 from the Combination shaft and makes an upcast of the incline. The seventeen men who undercook the dangerous journey climbed to the 2,000 level through this intense heat and then went through to the Combination shaft, reaching the surface early this morning. The other three were not able to stand, the heat and remained at the bottom until this noon, when the giraffe was righted and sent down after them. Luckily the pumps worked all right, or A new giraffe was put on tothey might have been drowned. day, and all is working well. ot the-2,4- 00 BULLION SHIPMENTS. The following shipments were made from Salt Lake, through the companies named, for the week ending August 2Gth: PACIFIC EXPRESS COMPANY. MINING IN NORTH CAROLINA. ; In the southeastern part of Ashe county, North Carolina, on one of the branches of the New river, is located the property of the Copper Knob Mining Company, consisting of 250 acres of land. The mine is situated on the slope of Copper Knob Mountain, 370 feet from the summit. A shaft had been sunk on the mine to a depth of 40 feet previous to the time that the oom-- ; pany took possession of it, and was then abandonhd. The com-- i pany has continued the shaft down to a depth of 200 feet, the first GO feet being vertical, and the remainder an incline fol-- i lowing the vein. The last quarterly report of the superintend-- ; cut, which was issued on May 31, 1SS0, stated that at 100 feet the vein was 19 inches wide on the west side and 22 inches wide on the east side of the shaft. The first level was run east a dis-- j tance of G3 feet. The whole distance driven from the mouth of the level into the mountain was 297 feet. The shaft is 12 feet by 7 feet, and is well timbered. Assays have been made from the ore just as it came from the mine and averaged 12 per cent copper, $20 gold and $13 silver per ton. The company now has $7,500 worth of assorted ore in sacks, of which it is proposed to sell $5,000 worth, and out of the proceeds to pay a dividend of one per cent. In addition, there is now on the dump at the mine 25,000 worth of ore, while there is in the treasury of the company a reserve fund of $7,300 in cash and 100,000 shares of the stock. While the company has thus been carefully preparing itself for all future demands upon its traasury, it has kept out of debt and owes nothing more than the current expenses, which are met as fast as they become due.
