City, Utah Salt Lake Stock Quotations New Methods Hurts Mining THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 1947 Of Manganese n f r mation o Supplementing i previously available on the possible development of low-co- st processes for the utilization of domestic low-gramanganese ores, the Bureau of Mines has Issued a new publication deinscribing wartime pilot-pla- nt vestigations on the matte . ing of the extensive submarginal-grade manganese ores near Chamberlain, S. D., DivR. R. Sayers, director of the bureau, announced today. Conducted at the bureaus Boulder City, Nev., experiment station, the research was inaugurated in 1942 when the nation was threatened with a shortage of ferro-gramanganese oxide to meet the mounting demands of the steel industry. Because of this imminent crisis, the work was concerned primarily with the development of a workable and practicable, but not necessarily economic, process, Dr. Sayers stated. Although the research was curtailed at the end of the war, encouraging results were obtained in reducing the cost of producing an exceedingly . hlgh- oxide from the Side manganese deposits, considered this nations largest single reserve of manganese ore, the di- NON-OPERATI- Bingham Metals, 2000 at 6. By all of the iron and manganese, bureau engineers reported, high smelting recoveries were realized and valuable byproducts were obtained. An over-a- ll recovery of only 74.4 per cent manganese was obtained in the small furnace smelting operation possible in the but bureau technicians predicted higher manganese reoperacovery in larger-sca- le tions. Coincident with the release of the report on the pilot-pla- nt operations was the issuance of a related bureau publication on the preparation of manganese electrolyte from manganese mattes and pure oxides. This report, written by David Schlain, metallurgist of the bureaus Salt Lake City, Utah, Metallurgical Branch, also is based on work at the Boulder City plant. This latter investigation demonstrated that virtually all the manganese, can be extracted from manganese mattes by leaching with spent electrolyte and the resulting solutions can be purified and electrolyzed in the usual way to produce metallic manganese of normal quality at normal current efficiency. ep : sul-fidizi- ng at 1.05. at at 7.
