Children of Magna elementary are being encouraged to create their own Summer Rainbow in a reading program that is a spinoff of a Reading Road Rally held earlier this spr- ing. There are three sets of rules for the competition which ends Sept. 9, with the first two being aimed at first and second grade youngsters and the third for those in third through sixth grade classes. Rules for the older children state they must read at least two Award Newbery be which books, may found at the public library. They must read a total of 2,000 pages to qualify for the general prize, which remains a secret until the contest is over. Titles and the number of pages in each book, as well as the date each is completed, must also be recorded and returned with daily time sheet. Those in the second grade must read at least two Newbery or the child, Caldecott Award readnotomore books during the summer and must read a minimum of 1,500 pages to qualify for the general prize. In addition, they will also receive a certificate of merit. Children in the first grade will have a modified version of the rules for older children because parents can but for than five percent of the reading requirement. Two Caldecott or Newbery books must be read, or take homes that have been saved from the school year. In addition the parent may write sentences for the child to read, or child they may review sounds and names of unless they marked it as such.
