Excels Has Spring Fever; "Sisters" Win Phoenix's Dee Stevenson and company romped over the Excelsior men in the benefit water polo game Friday, March 28, by the score of 6 to 2. It was a hard fought game all the way but the tired bxcelsior could not keep up the Now You See 'em How You Don't By Rick Carlson We have had mass desertion of Weber's basketball stars for the third consecutive year. Either it is a high paying job or a good deal at a larger college. Five of Weber's prominent athletes have disappeared from the campus. Where did they go? Why did they go? Don Budge and Larry Peterson were abducted by Cec Baker of the Utah State Agricultural College at Logan. Darrel Tucker, Bob Harbertson and Bill Hull were taken the same way in previous years. Jay Brown and Glen Hadfteld were intrigued with the all-mighty dollar. They decided that seeing that since the casaba season was over, they had contributed ample service to the school. Feeling that there was nothing more for them at Weber, they became railroad workers. The fifth of the "Now you see 'em, now you don't" boys Don Butler was shot by cupids arrow. The blow was seemingly fatal as he took the big step of matrimony with the ex-Marilyn Bowman. Evidently it's hard for Weber to compete with other colleges and fabulous jobs. It Certainly makes it difficult for Weber and Weber's coaching staff to maintain athletic prestige when its trained athletes exist en masse. i BLUE RIBBON Stable & BLUE RIBBON Drive Inn Reservations Phone 3-6888 Do your Eastering on horseback at the Blue Ribbon Stables. Dee Stevenson was the main factor in the win for Phoenix because of his brilliant, tricky playing. He scored 5 of the 6 points with LaGrand Fletcher scoring the sixth on a free throw. Doug Brian and Cless Pack carried a big share of Excelsior's load until they finally tired out in favor of Phoenix. It was Brian who scored Excelsior's two lonely points that come in the second quarter of the game. It had earlier been announced that this game would be a bloody battle, and anybody that didn't like the sight of blood should not attend, but the novelty of it was the fact that fewer fouls were committed than in any other water polo game of the entire season, although there never was a dull moment during the entire four quarters of the game. Mr. Clair Anderson (Andy) announced at the half time period that on Friday, April 4, the Awards Committee was sponsoring another water polo game between a group of hand-picked Utah University all-stars and a special group of Weber college all-stars. He promised it to be another thriller and encouraged every body to attend. Tubber Triumphs Tubber Okuda, outstanding Weber college boxer, finally came into his own last Friday night by win ning the inter-mountain AAU. The final night found Tubber facing Ted Keener of the State school, for the 126 pound championship. Tubber, after a brief slugfest with Keener, scored the shortest knockout of his career when he dropped his opponent in 1:26 of the first round. He announced after his victory "I finally made it, but I've decided to quit boxing." Okuda has had many tough breaks in his fighting, such as losing the Golden Gloves by a split decision this year. Track Men Plan Big Season There will be more track meets for Weber track men this year than there has been in previous years, Mr. Clair Anderson, coach of the Weber track team, announced this week. He said Weber is looking forward to one of its biggest seasons. He promises that each meet will be a thriller because of the competition Weber will be giving to the other colleges. Weber, of course, having another good team this year, will be racing for victory all the way to the end of the season. Returning lettermen are: La Mont Lamb and Dick Van Wagner in the field events, Don Fleming in the sprints, and Merrill Sessions running the distance. New men who have reported for duty are: Don Shaw, Don Colvin, Dale CowgiU, and Paul Slater in the sprints, Blaine Taylor, Larry Wright and LeGrande Lamb in distances, and Gary Loosli, Jerry Brett, Dick Hulse, and Bob Merrill in the field events. He said the team could use some more good hurdlers, pole vaulters, and high jumpers, and urged anybody interested in these fields to report to him as soon as possible. The meets that Weber will participate in are: April 12 Nampa, Idaho (Invitational)April 26 B.Y.U. (Invitational) May 10 Westminster (Conference)May 19 Westminster(Invitational) There will be practice meets with Weber high and Ogden high teams, and the dates will be an nounced later. By Hugh Jacobs The main purpose in the establishment of Phoenix was to promote school spirit and lead out in student body work. Also to keep a good scholastic record. Since that time the "Sisters", (the name Phoenix received from this act) have usually held several seats on the Board of Control. A number of times including last year and this year Phoenix has had a majority vote in the Board. We feel there is some quality there. In Forensic work tor many years Phoenix men-t- have led out. Quality? As to the question of Intra-murals which is the main topic of conversation today. Last year most clubs began intra-murals rather evenly in respect to quality and quanity. Phoenix won a hard fought battle with an outstanding Sigma team in touch-football to take a substantial lead in points. Phoenix had an outstanding basketball team which also took first place. But about the middle of the basketball season (Nov. and Dec.) military service hit the school very hard. Excelsior was probably hit the hardest due to the enlistment of many "E" boys, and was hurt every way by the loss of same. Phoenix went on to take the following spring sports easily. At the beginning of this year each club rushed all the fellows they could. Excelsior wanted to build up its membership to the maximum number which is 55 fellows. It is no fault of Phoenix or Excelsior that the latter club's membership does not equal the formers. However, it was stated that Phoenix was trying to equal AMS, this is not so and the difference in enrollment in the two clubs in no more than fifteen members. . Also each club has equal advantages to enter as many teams in intra-murals. The purpose of intra-murals is to give everyone who is not qualified to compete in school athletics a chance to participate in some form of sports. It is Phoenix's desire to give every fellow in the club equal opportunity to be a part of theintra-mural program. Our main purpose is not to enter all we can in these events for the sole purpose of acquiring points. This is Excelsior's big complaint and it is altogether untrue and unfair assumption for the jealous second place organization to cry about. The article in the preceeding Signpost gave a slight implication that intra-murals were not being run the way they should. To the contrary it is this writer's idea that the intra-mural management is doing a swell job. Congratulations to you. It isn't too wise for Excelsior to count on all first places in athletics yet, the year still leaves swimming, Softball, track, tennis andhorseshoes. Baseball Starts Milt Mecham, Weber college baseball coach has high hopes for the coming baseball season. He says he expects to field a strong team in the spring campaign. Many of last year's stars are back this year, including Ronnie Harris, Burt Hunsaker, Devon Britenbeker, Tubber Okuda, Ron Stevens, Mark Baliff, and Doug Brian. The entire roster includes, in-fielders Sunny Freston, Richard Peterson, Marv Henderson, Roy Nelson, Mark Baliff, Merrill Frances, Dick Brown, Devon Britenbeker, and Dick Hulse. Outfielders are Ron Harris, Burt Hunsaker, Ron Lowder and Wendell Farr. Pitchers are Ron Stevens, Rollo Hansen, Don Shaw, Marv Henderson and Doug Brian. The entire playing schedule has not been completed but a few of the games listed are: April 25 & 26 Weber vs. Westminster.May 2 & 3 Weber vs. Boise. May 9 & 10 Weber vs. Ricks. May 17 Weber vs. Ogden Ford Sales. The proceeds from the Weber-Ogden Ford Sales game will go to the Awards Committee. Also games have been slated with Hill Field AFB. So, of course, I ups and gives him one." Ogden Billiards "PENTHOUSE" For Billiard Recreation 2408 Wash. Blvd. (UPSTAIRS) I SWIMMERS & TENNIS PLAYERS!
