Show Page 6 SIGNPOST MARCH 30, 1962 ton Knock Cats From Tourney cfgies, Wilsnlfig Wildcats Eliminated M ECansas Early By Keau Conger Sports Editor After winning a thrilling series in championship style from a highly touted Boise crew, the Weber College Wildcats were quickly eliminated from the NJCAA tourney in Hutchinson, Kansas last week. . and dependable Jerry Trice fouled out m the second half. Wilmington thumped Weber 78- Aggies Overwhelm Oats The Cameron Aggies of Lawbon Oklahoma overwhelmed the Cats in the first round 93-74 with Jim Barnes tallying 39 points for the winners. In each contest the lead was rapidly altered. At one stage in the game, the Oklahoma team enjoyed an 18 point lead, but as little as a 2 point margin was maintained at 34-32. Motta Manages Crippled Crew In the Wilmington game the Cats held a narrow winning margin in the opening minutes, but time and crippled players weakened the Ogden crew until they suffered a 16 point set back. Weber's virtuoso of the casba court, Ron Thomas, painfully performed with ia bad case of fallen arches and disabling knee splints. Bon Thomas, suffering from injuries, potted over 50 points during the course of the two games with fine playing for a person of in perfect health Trice Proves Valuable Jerry Trice performed like a star jockey as he rode in big baskets when they counted most and jockeyed with the best for rebounds. Freshman Shines Freshman, Al Palfreyman from Davis High, came off the bench inexperienced, but performed like like a master. Working well on the boards and doing his share of basket making. Guards, O'Dell and Garrett, gave the Cats the outside shooting necessary in order bo loosen the defense for the short ones. The team lost, no doubt, but they did it in a winning fashion. 64. Inconsistency cost Oats game Inconsistency was the downfall of the Cat quintet, as amiss-noth-ing-hit-everything ..spree ..Would completely reverse or an exacting defense would oollaps momentar- iiy- Radio commentators, however, gave praise to Motta and company for their undoing tendancy and fine display of sportsmanship not to mention the devotion of the accompanying cheerleaders. Spring Sports Underway Soon Weber's winter sports coaches are rapidly making the transision from winter to spring sports. Coach Motta will switch from basketball to track mentor, while Coach Willilams will head the baseball nine. Coach Williams has a rigid and tentative schedule prepared for the baseballers consisting of 27 games with all but three being double headers affairs. Initiates Billiards Program As you can tell by the picture of the officers the girls in W.I.A. 'are taking up a new sport, Billiards. This fascinating game will start a week from today, so girls get out those cue sticks and start warming up. Besides engaging in the strenuous battle of the billiard balls, we will also play tennis. Girls grap those rackets and start practicing. See you on the courts. New W. C. Bowling Team To Be Chosen Next Week By Jerry NeWell The Weber Colleger bowling team will roll-off against the top ten bowlers of a March 16 series held in the Union Lanes next week. Fifteen Vie For Team Membership From these fifteen keglers a new WC bowling team will be selected on the basis of the five top scorers with the next five highest being members of the alternate team. The original bowling team was composed of1 Tom Bingham, Lyman Kano, Eugene Soto, Pepper Coombs, Cass Rivera, and Dallas Buckway. Top Ten Keglers The ten top shooters of March 16, were Ren Richens, with a 209 average; Tom Hori; with 1001 total pins, along with Elmer Al-dous, Gal Bole, Jim Bowman, Ron Kenfield, Bill Okamoto, Ross Carn Fred Treece, and Bobby LaFram-boise.An Intel-mountain College Bowling Tournament is tentatively set for May. The exact date will be announced later. The Weber College lanes and the University of Utah lanes are being considered for tournament location. Weber College has announced its basketball schedule for next year as a four-year college. The teams selected may come under fire, as some comment, that there are many "weak sisters" on the schedule. The schedule which consists of 15 away games and 12 home contests goes as follows: December 3, at Ohio State. December 5, at Cincinatti December 28-31 Holiday Classic. Other Teams: USU, Utah, UCLA, USC, WEST Virginia, Kansas and Iowa. Feburary 1, Holy Cross February 3, Doubleheader, St. Josephs' and NYU. February 4, at Kentucky. February 5, at Mississippi State February 6, at Ttxas State. February 7, Home double header Utah and Wyoming. February 23, St. Bonaventure. February 30 Home triple header: TCU, Kansas State and North Carolina. March 3, three games series with Westminster. March 7, toughest season gamej Clearfield Jr. High. |
