Show /port/ MONDAY'OCTOBER 3-2005 B5 Just Chatt'n with fllorgcin Vance This week, Lacee Koelliker joined me on the only bleacher row available to us inside the Activities Center MV: You come from Las Vegas, but to me your personality is so "un- Vegas" like if that makes any sense. Would you agree? LK: A lot of people are like, "oogh, Sin City, do you live in a hotel?" And I'm like, "No, just a regular person, live in a house." But I never went down to the Strip, unless we had visitors. MV: You've just entered your junior year, but ever since you arrived at UVSC, you've been a major part of Sam Atoa's offense. What has getting thrown in the mix so early done for Lacee Koelliker? LK: It helped me build more confidence in not only myself, but my teammates. Coach has helped me in so many ways, both on and off the court, just trusting me and giving me that confidence where I feel like I've gained more character and more focus to be able to come out and try to lead this team. the chance to be here at UVSC and play all these teams is an honor. I remember watching them in awe growing up because they were so good, and then to be able to play against them is unreal. MV: What's in the CD player right now? Wait let me guess. Sara McLaughlin? LK: (smiles) No. MV: Jay Z? LK: Probably more like Yellow card or Kelly Clarkson. MV: Just curious, you ever seen Coach Atoa smile? LK: (laugh) Yes. MV: You've been so used to having two hard-hitting Brazilians flying around from both corners. Have you found a new Deise and Alina this year, or will it ever be the same since their departures? LK: No one can replace Deise (Borghetti) and Alina (Wallauer); they were amazing players. But it's also been so much fun this year to really mix it up. Camie (Manwill) on the outside and Anne (Olsen) on the outside, they've been putting balls away. And with Jessica (Endres) and Brook Adams on the inside, they just kill everything. And even Stephanie (McFarland) on the right side. It seems like I can go more places. MV: I don't want to embarrass you, but you did have a 4.5 G.P.A in high school. Honestly, I didn't know that grade point averages went that high. Did you just take every AP class in the book, and how were you an athlete on top of all that? MV: Really? LK: I have. He's a funny man. He lets it out on road trips. You get him at 4:30 in the morning when we're on our way home, and he's a whole different person. MV: (nodding) There is something about a bus and the early morning that changes us all, isn't there? LK: Exactly. LK: (laugh) I only took one AP class my whole high school career and the rest were just honors classes; and I played volleyball all year round, (chuckle) I don't know, it just came easy for me I guess. MV: In your mind, I wouldn't lose any credibility as a reporter if I told you I'm barely pulling a 3.2, would I? Jessica Ellsworth/NetXNewi LK: Never. Customer Service MV: Just checking. MV: I don't mean to pun here, but you keep setting school assist records almost every week. But they're records you owned before. Is that a personal challenge for you to keep doing that? LK: (laugh) We'll, I don't really try to...I try not to focus on the numbers. I just want to give my hitters the best ball, and they do all the work. They're the ones making me look good. I just throw it up there and they terminate it. MV: So you're not gonna be averaging 70 assists a match by midseason next year? LK: You know what...if my hitters could put all those balls down, oh... that would be beautiful. •"•7 MV: I don't know if you're aware of this, but there's a rumor floating around you've got eyes in the side of your head. I've never seen anyone so effective at faking the set and dinking the ball over. You have a name for that move? LK: (nods) The dump. - . : ' {•',•>'!
