Show The Paper That Dares To Take A Stand its Meaning of 1 972 Elections Continued From Page 1 voting out of office a three-ter-m incumbent U.S. Senator and replacing him with a Democratic challenger who, significantly enough, had been a Republican until just two years ago. As has been widely recognized, the massive vote for President Nixon was by no means so much a personal endorsement of him as a total rejection of his opponent and of what that opponent was seen to stand for. One could well call this, only half in jest, the you dont want McGovern, do you? election. Its only genuine mandate was against the image Senator McGovern had become saddled with, partly as a result of his own views and actions, but with a big assist from the media. One of aspects of this election was the manner in which the media first made McGovern as a Presidential candidate through Republican its constant one-sid- ed our against propaganda to resistance Communist aggresion in Vietnam : - and then broke him after his nomination, primarily by its handling of the affair of Senator Eagleton, while greatly modulating December 14, 1972 opposition to President Nixon. The effect of the 1972 elections in Congress will be to move it more to the left, by almost anyones standards. That this will happen in the Senate is generally recognized, in view of the political position of the majority of the newly elected Senators by comparison with their predecessors. It will also happen in the House, principally because of the earlier decision of an unusually large number of able and relatively conservative Members to retire his year. Their replacements tend to be much more in sympathy with the current trends in Washington. A few notable exceptions may emerge' among new Members from some of the Western States. But there will be a challenge to the but political establishment that now runs both the old parties. The American Party has emerged as a significant political factor 'in our country, receiving an average of more than 2.3 per cent of the Presidential vote in the States where it was not kept off the ballot by hostile local officials and judges - a total of more than a million popular votes. The American Party expects to put forward a once-veheme- nt two-head- ed g Essay Cotrtos?
