Show The Daily Utah Chronicle. Monday. May 2. 1977 Page Four The Readers' Viewpoint Violence to ensue laws of morality- -i -- Well maybe we should just smash a few heads. Maybe the only way to make sense of the senseless situation is to rampage for blood Aher all nothing makes a cause serious like a Utile blood and nothing draws people's attention faster than an open wound, especially a dripping slash from some subtle symbolic tool of the underculrure like a pool cue or a broken beer bottle. No one wants to hear the logic behind a claim for a few basic freedoms, like being allowed to throw a football in a city park after 1 1 p.m. or to watch a basic act of intercourse in a movie that does not have the prior consent of an eager handful of government It doesn't matter how obviously harmless it is to drink a can of beer in a park on a hot afternoon. It is illegal. And a law that says no one will drink beer in the parks just because some in the past have consumed mass quantities and disturbed the peace, a law that declares an absolute with no sensitivity to the exceptions, must have as its root a dominant moral feeling that drinking beer in any quantity or form is wrong. Sometimes it seems the dominant moral feeling of this state is made into senseless law too often and with too little justification. Perhaps its lawmakers want to keep the state young, immature and culturally separate from the rest cf the world because they equate the freedom and tolerance cf a mature society with the reckless and rampant violence and disorder of ghetto mobbery. Unfortunately these lawmakers will see that sad side cf society in spite of their efforts to keep it at bay. Football will be played in the park after 1 1 p.m. Movies depicting various unacceptable methods of intercourse and other "dangerous" sexual oddities will be smuggled in instead of reaching their voluntary viewer through legitimate means of marketing. And young, restless kids will drive around 7th East and State Street and 21st South drinking beer chased with bourbon chased with dope. They will hover around the forbidden municipal grass until their bravery is artificially sweetened enough for action. Then they will swagger hotly past the park boundaries. The police will confront them. Some will be arrested quietly. Some will say'VVhat the hell!" and resist People will get hurt Blood and open wounds will make the news. People will notice. So maybe if appeals to sensibility won't reach people, a few smashed heads will And Anita Bryant is, underneath her Miss America gowa a redneck bigot Ah jes luv tuh call Sutherners redneck bigots, its such a cheap shot! Kirk quotes Voltaire about tolerance, but proceeds to say that it is not his business what two consenting adults do in the privacy of their own home, thus implying that that is the place for them and that they should stay there. This is like Anita saying that they should stay in their closets. ..He questions depriving gays of their livelihood, which is just like Anita saying that "As long as they do their jobs, that's fine." And he says that hom- osexuality is unnatural, houses, then resist arrest and assault a cop. Gays have been in about every society in history. They are not a strange new mutation from some lab. So it's about time for some fair treatment And I wonder if Kirk supposes that every homosexual is a very fairy guy who flits like a bird and leaps tall erections in a single bound. IF that bothers Kirk, then he should stay home and mind his own business, naturally. And you, Anita Redneck Bigot in your mom and apple pie colored gown, gays are becoming more assertive for their rights, and they are not going to be collectively pushed back into any closet. Because of their efforts, many states have changed archaic laws and enacted legislation protecting the rights of gays. But the bigots toting a Bible (or Bock of Mormon) have yet to give up their anti-gacampaigns It is unfortunate that the Nixon Supreme Court (four Nixon voted appointees) constitutional against gays' rights by ruling that states have the right to legislate against homosexuality. Both Chronicle). argue with fail but to back that opinion with facts. On the opinion other hand. Heinrichs has supported his points with quotation of Mormon prophets and scripture. (April 25). There are many good things I could say about the Mormon Church. I've been a member for many years and nave nonoraoiy served a two-year church mission. I've read and studied the scriptures and the writings of our church prophets. There are a good many teachings therein. But I have also found inconsistencies and contradictions. Tim pointed out just one of them. I'm not saying that this proves our church to be false, but I would caution those of you who proudly point a finger of scorn at those who believe differently that we do to be less scornful and Heinrichs' Religious forum: Bravo Tim. vou really have some impressive quotes. Did you lock them up all by yourself, or find them by your careful study of the Mormon Church? Did you know that these are the same arguments that have been used for at least 100 years by the more rational in your arguments. I would counsel Tim, you are just repeating you to be a little more humble what 1000 others have and perhaps a little more written before you, in your diligent in your studies of attempt to downgrade the scripture and prophetic Mormon faith. Last Monday's religious Forum evidenced a general confusion concerning the Godhead, and even implied that Mormons believe Adam to be our God. To such misrepresentation the Lord might reply as he did to Job, "Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?" The counsel is: "We warn you against the dissemination of doctrines which are not according to the scriptures and which are alleged to have been taught by some of the General Authorities of past generations. Such, for instance, is the Adam-Go- d theory." (Pres. Kimball, Oct. '76) What do the scriptures and "Mormon doctrine assert?" I pray (hoping) that you pray that we all might understand this, "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:... And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil:" (Genesis 1:26, 3:22) Now, to whom was God speaking? About whom is God speaking, what man? When man looks into a mirror he sees an image like whose? Is "us," and "our" singular or plural? These are some questions that have haunted the Christian world for years. In 1820 God shed a great deal of light on the subject when he appeared, along side His son Jesus Christ to a boy named Joseph Smith Jr. Joseph said he saw and spoke with "two personages" like men, but "whose brightness and Latter-da- y glory defy all description." (see also Acts 7:55-56- ) as: "And I, 3:22 recorded renders Gen. Joseph by scripture the Lord God, said unto mine only begotten: Behold the man is become one of us to know good and evil." (Moses 4:28) So from both ancient and modern revelation we know that God the Father and His son Jesus Christ are two separate and distinct Gods. How are they one? Jesus prayed to his Father as we do for his disciples "that they may be one, even as we When we can understand how are one. (John 17:11, 21-2we are to be one, with God in us, then we can talk about how they, with the Holy Ghost are three Gods in "one Eternal God." We further learn that man is in the image and likeness 3) the most high God. The literal son of God, after his resurrection still had a body (Luke 24:39), and is today in that form. (1 Jn 3:2) Was Jesus not "as man is?' Is he not now a Father and God of the righteous, even as His Father is God over all? Do not most if not all sons have the potential to become like their fathers? (Matt 5:48) Joseph said they looked alike. In fact did not Jesus come to show us what we could become, and "the way." (1 Pet 1:2-4- ) Thi "doctrine of eteral progression" is as plain as the print in your Bible, a manifestation of God's love for His children. The Bible says God is a Spirit but we also are spirits. We are all the spirit children of God Father of Jesus. (Hebrews 12:9) We have a tabernacle of flesh and bone. So does our Father and His son, though theirs are now glorified. That verse was written that we might worship God "in spirit" But to do such we don't take off our body, and neither does He. Oh this subject Brigham Young said, 'God is a person of tabernacle, possessing in an infinitely higher degree all the perfections and qualifications of his mortal children. We believe that he made Adam after his own image and likeness, as Moses testified...." (JD, 10:230) Here he distinguishes Adam from God. He further stated, "But the Gospel tells us that we are the sons and daughters of that God whom we serve. Some say, 'We are the children of Adam and Eve.' So we are, and they are the children of our Heavenly Father." (JD 13:311) In last Monday's Journal of Discourses quote of Brigham I think if one corrected the g in "God" to "god," it would be more in accord with the Lord. (John 10:34-35- ) (Brigham Young did not write the Jxmrnal of Discourses. It was printed in England, and is not an LDS church publication.) Through these references I think it is plain to see that our God "whom we serve" is not Adam but his Father, "our Heavenly Father," and God His son, our Saviour who first loved and served us. Now, which God god do you serve? Larsen of |
