This is the third reunion of the Submarine Veterans of World War II, an organization formed in 1955. Groton possesses two hallmarks in submarine history. These are the United States Submarine Base, home of the atomic submarines Nautilus and Seawolf, and the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation, pioneers in the construction of conventional and nuclear powered submarines. The Submarine Veterans of World War II, numbering over I,- 030 members, was formed by two veterans of the USS Bergall, a sub that gained fame in the Pacific campaign. A membership drive now underway is aimed at increasing the group's total. During World War II, thirty thousand served in the submarine service, includWAVES temporarily assigned to submarine dutv The reunion plans include subing twenty-fiv- e marine cruises, a banquet, special speakers and a memorial service commemorating deceased submariners of past wars. Persons interested in attending the convention or qualified for membership are urged to contact Paul F. Stolp-maDistrict Cadr, Box 1520a Salt Lake City. Cantaloupes 5. A , can-- J The cigarette smoking-luncer problem is causing great concern among the smokers of the country. They stand uncertainly! between the pronouncements of the health and cancer groups on the one side and the counter-claims- ! of the tobacco industry. The industry contends there is no real evidence of a relationship. The proof to date, it claims, is only statistical, not scientific. In the overall battle against cancer, encourating results are reported by the American Cancer Society. Today, it states, one out of every three people afflicted is being saved, compared with only one in four a few years ago.
