Then the 4th of July came. "There was no celebration that day", quoted Miller. The troops set up a perimeter around the enemy. When some, including himself, were walking back to the starting spot, three mortar rounds were fired. "My left leg was blown off, my right leg torn up, and my right hand split in half. Shrapnel tore through my body and I was paralyzed...Now I know the cost of freedom!" It sounded good. Then it happened. "The bullets were flying everywhere. I was a mere 5'4", and now weighed 145 lbs, but only 18 years old", said the Vietnam Veteran. His demeanor was self-explanatory...he had a smile that won you over immediately, and after the friendly hand shake and greeting, it was as if he had been your friend forever. He is the only Utah referee who has been on the field for the Super Bowl - and he did it two times, for the Super Bowl XXXII in 1998 and Super Bowl XXXV in 2001. He loved the sport. He majored in physical education at Utah State University, after graduating from Coalville's High School at North Summit. "I guess you could say I started my "officiating career" with the junior high football players, and it was a way to have some extra money - he earned $5 per game!" ...and that is how it all began, to earn enough money to help pay the bills as a Utah State University Student. Little did he know that some 40 years later, he would earn $25,000 as the side judge in Super Bowl XXXII. His break came when he was asked to fill in for the Big Sky Championship game in 1971 at Weber State as the other line judge was injured in the previous game.
