Mrs. Nephi Packard who went to JSalt Lake last week to imdirjoan operation at the St. Marks Hospital is reported as being in excellent health and spirits and that the trouble she was having is of the past. She expects to return home next week. On Monday last Dr. Smart was called to Provo to assist Dr. Allen in a surgical operation for the removal of a stone from the bladder of a nine year old boy. The operation was successful. A stone the size of a small hen's egg being removed. J. VV. Roger has accepted a position with the Faxon, Horton tc Gallagher Drug Co. of Kansas City, Mo. His close acquaintance with prescriptions peculiarly adapts him, with his affable ways, for a good representative in Utah. Miss Eleaner I). Pyper, teacher of silk culture, accompanied by Miss Fenl Packard gave the Independent a pleasant call. Miss Pyper left for Nephi Wednesday night where she will take up a class. E. J. Stanson returned home from American Falls, Idaho, Monday. Mr. Stanson looks well and cheerful, hut for a couple of days the boys were unable to ruffle his unsmiling countenance. counte-nance. Travel in the siin and wind had given him a pair of chapped lips, to which the expression of mirth was to painful to be risked. Hurt Morris, a popular young man of Salt Lake, has bought out "Dwyer, the florist' and will continue the business at the old stand in the McCornick block, corner Main and First South streets. All letters should be so addressed. See his ad in this issue. P. Y. Johnson, who has spent the winter at Draper in the employ of the R. G. W. Ry., is in town for a short visit. Mrs. Johnson has been ill recently, re-cently, hut is now convalescent. Brig expects to return to Springvilie to reside soon. That's the way with neonlc who leave Springvilie. There's no town like it. Tho City has put in a number of new ditch crossings this spring. The new ones are twelve feet wide and replace the two and three foot old times, greatly to the joy of bicyclists. The bicyclist who cannot hit the present wide ditch crossing would better petition the committee of public safety for a platoon of tutors and guardians. Richard Thorn is rerouted as being almost well again, the operation -which was feared might terminate fatally by his relatives was one of the most successful ever performed outsidean hospital. Mr. Thorn says he feels better now (barring extreme hunger from the fast he has had for the last two weeks) than he has for years past. Much credit is due Dr. Smart and his able assistants for the successful result. Master Earl Evans, who was injured in-jured by fall from a home made merry go round a fortnight since, is rapidly recovering. Some of the lads had improvised a merry go round by the use of a wagon wheel and a long pole down at Mrs. Stewarts place. Earl, who was riding, became dizzy and fell off, striking hi forehead ( n a sharp rock." A gash three inches long was the result, which necessitated necessi-tated the services of a surgeon. The lad was unconscious for quite a while. JENNY LIND'S NERVOUSNESS. A reminiscent article on Jenny Lind and her home life has been prepared pre-pared by her daughter, Mrs. Raymond Maude, for publication in the May Ladles' Home Journal. It is said to be filled with Interesting memories of the famous singer, and is noteworthy note-worthy also as being tho first view we have f her through the eyes of her adoring daughter. Mrs. Maude ' brings to light the fact that Jenny Llnd was always nervous and overstrung over-strung before events just before singing In a new opera or oratorio, but was quite calm when the very moment of action arrived. i Hmt Cuush Uvrso. The Agricultural Experiment Station of Utah (loins to gather information in-formation regarding the most common destructive insect pests of the State. You are requested to aid usinthis woik during the coming season. The results will be published in the course of next winter, in the form of a bulletin, and distributed among the farmers and fruit growers of Utah, Our object is to present the life histories and hibits, so far as known, of the most common injuriousspecies, and suggest the most practical remedies reme-dies for dealing with them. To facilitate our work the Experiment Experi-ment Station invites you to send to the entomologist any form of insect which, in your opinion, is in any way injurious or beneficial to plants or animals of any kind. Insects may be sent by mail, in small tin boxes, and should be marked mark-ed with the name and address or the sender and accompanied by a letter or postal giving a few words of explanation, explana-tion, such as locality where found, plantor animal affected, manner of attack, abundance, etc If possible a portion of the injured plant should be ine'osed with the insect, or when this is not practical, sent in u separate sepa-rate package. Always send a dozen or more insects if that number can be obtained. When the request is made insects will be named and the best known remedy suggested to the sender, by letter. Hoping to receive the benefit of your cooperation in the course of the season, and thanking you in advance for any favors, I am respectfully yours, Paul Fisher, Entomologist.
