"1 ADDLES 10 HIE EDITORS OF UTAH Having been hoiiered by my bretbern of the press to the responsible re-sponsible position of President of the Utah Pre9s Association, 1 deem it proper to outline my views of the responsibilities, of the position nnd the multitudinous multi-tudinous objects of the existence of tb? association. That unity of the society is strength coos without styine (hat the editor should have for big object the deceminatiun of good is also a recognized fact. Therefore There-fore with these facts us a basis the object for its maintainance should be plainly set forth and the best means of accomplishing it will be considered. There are at present over one hundred names on the roll book, besides the honorary members, of this membership only about 25 per cent, are editors and proprietors pro-prietors of newspapers, of the 100 members only ubout 10 per cent, have remembered that in udditiou to the iniation fee ol $1.00 that a yearly due of $1.00 is ulso one of the requisite?. Every live organization must needs have money to maintain its life and every member to take a live interest in the welfare wel-fare of the organization must needs throw sooiQsnch anchor as $1 00 per year to retain his or lier interest and membership. There is another idea that meets the favor of i he executive committer", which is, that the association shall furnish a nicely designed electrotype to eacl paper who holds membership in the association who will run it at the head of either the local or editorial page showing their membership and interest in the Utah 1 'ress Association. To ac complish this the President with one member of the executive Committee expects to visit each cityintho state where a newspaper news-paper is published, that is near (h e railroad, and personally so licit membership, and space in A I - - 1 . t me columns oi the re spective newspapors who wil carry this insignia of member ship in their papers. Regarding our trip toNew Or ltana there are many details to arrange both as to the transpor tation and organization of the parly. Each newspaper is ex pected to urge the public to ac company .the excursion. The ITi.t. T i ... utnu i ress Association car should be decorated with stream.-ers stream.-ers and other evidences of life and of all things a full represen tation of the Utah newspapers should attend. The officers of the association would like to see them out 100 strong with none but bona fide newspaper men And their ladies, that another 100 honorary members and visitors visi-tors shall participate, that Utah will retura the famous visit of the Louisanat editors, and if anything outshine their brilliant brill-iant showing. To do (his all that is required is unity and combined efforts' of all, then success will cbmt, our efforts resulting re-sulting in most advantageous advertising fdr'Uftah and her tuany newspapers.. , The streets of Spring ville art in a deplorable condition and the good lord knows when they will ever improve. A prominent member of the city council told the writer that there has never been a question raised when the street supervisor has presented a bill for street repairs; that the committee on streets have repeatedly asked that more attention at-tention be paid the streets, and yet the excuse is given that the? poll tax is the only available fund with which to maintain the Btreet in even a decent con dition, that is available for use. At present, we have no easy means of getting across the street from any point without wading ankle deep in the mire. wo loads of gravel per month , . . ... mr finch frnyamir umiilil t loaat ." 6 ., . Keep mem in a passable condi- ' 1 tion, and a few loads in the low depressions which may be noted at many points along main street would indeed be a boon to pedestriaus and teamsters, to say nothing of the improved opinion of travelers passing through the city. If it becomes . , . ,..,, means oi geiung me iunu, why noi start a public street fund of abor and cash? We have enough enterprising citizens who ii. .... would rather contribute to a spec- ial fund than have the streets look so tough and cause so much inconvenience for nedeatriana and travelers. It was thought that the senators and . . . ... reDresentativea who ip .1 nt i against him would sutely come down to a realization of the wishes of the people and give tlieni what they wanted, but in this they were sadly disappoint ed, and now the public can only look with regret in having re posed confidence in men who were as straw whose will was, ud is .subiect to some other --ii power than the public wishes. How is it our school trustee's have not changed the time of convening school at 9;30 instead of 9;00? If such were done, it would be, it seems to us, much better for all concerned, for as a matter of fact even when 9;30 arrives it is really only a few minutes past 9 by the sun or natural time. This is the time that is set for calling schools in Salt Lake City, in Provo and ought to be in Springville. In the winter 9;30 is plenty early enough to get the children out and to school and in the spring and summer months a half hour fur morning chores is very val uable. Q -t, . . in Springville it need not nec- ... cessarilv be lost as it would only i i . .i r. make inroads into the Hrtprnnnn J "spare time" and at the same time not cause so much extra labor on our mothers who have the immediate responsibilities of getting the children off to school in the mornine. The Sunday afternoon meet ings always begin on time. Promptness and punctuality seems to be the rule withoutany exceptions. It would be well for the minor organization to follow suit, for nothing inspires more respect for presiding offi cers than punctuality both in beginning and closing. Every attendant at afternoon meetings exPects to be lat if lliey arrive after 2 p. m., aud they usually close on time. The next man to enter the matrimonial field of the newspaper news-paper fraternity is our friend Walter L. Webb of the Lehi Banner, who was married Wed- jnesday and held their reception lady whom Walter has asked to share his lot was Miss Mattie Francom. How about that cruelty to animals hill? What's the nutter nut-ter with Mr. Roy lance introducing introduc-ing it? Jt will pass all right. , It was a wise arrangement that prompted the inviting of the three prominent candidates lo address the joint assembly of the Utah legislature. It will heal many a broken tie and strained relations with prominent promi-nent members of the Democratic party. . Has all those electric light propositions been pigeon holed indefinately? Snell made a good ODe, Scott sprung a good one, the Provo power dam people peo-ple hinted at some. We should like to see some of them mater-salize mater-salize into a fact. People hereabout are glad the controversy is over and will, as all true patriots do, submit to the will of the majority. Hon. Jas. L. Rawlins, while he may not suit the majority, will have the support of all loyal citizens. When oh! when will our road through main street receive some attention? The only decent crossing known is the one made by Tupper & Stanson with a few loads of cinders . Gossipers of Springville had a sweet ruorsel of scandal to hash and rehash last week.
