It can be said that the president expects that the country will have the benefit of Secretary Roots services yet for several months, certainly until the beginning of the next year. That Governor Taft will be Mr Roots successor as secretary of war there can be little or no doubt. He is familiar with many of the problems which the secretary of war will have to meet and solve; he is a warm personal friend of the president, who has an abiding confidence in his ability and patriotism, and it is understood that he would welcome the change involved. BOB MEEKS AT LIBERTY. Idaho Desperado Makes Escape After Many Futile Attempts. Bob Meeks, one of the most notorious criminals in the west, connected with the famous Hole in the Wall gang in Wyoming, who was convicted several years ago and sentenced to thirty-fiv- e years in the Boise, Idaho, penitentiary for robbing the bank of Montpelier, after two sensational escapes from the jail of Bear Lake county before being transferred to the penitentiary, and who was recently adjudged Insane and removed to the state insane asylum at Blackfoot, has effected his escape, and, notwithstanding his crippled condition, has so far eluded his pursuers. Meeks is unquestionably one of the most desperate and ingenious criminals known to this country. While confined in the Jail of Bear Lake county for the bank hold up in Montpelier, he scaled the walla surrounding the jail In broad daylight in the presence of fifty people in and about the court house at Paris. All trace of his whereabouts was lost for months until he turned up in the Deer Lodge, Mont penitentiary, where he had been sentenced from Butte for one year in connection with a minor offense. Upon the expiration of his term in Deer Lodge he was again brought to Bear Lake county and tried for the offense of holding up the bank, In which affair "Butch Cassiday and other of Meeks his associates participated. was the only one caught by the officers, and Judge Standrod gave him years. While confined in Boise he escaped twice. The second escape waB when he made & headlong leap from the top of the walls surrounding the prison wherein he suffered a broken leg and, notwithstanding the difficulties under which he labored, he managed to keep the entire prison force in a quandary for severel days before being captured. Soon after his capture the broken leg was amputated and after its amputation he feigned lnsanfty and was removed by the authorities to the asylum. thirty-fiv- e Demented Men Killed. Another fatality has resulted In the pursuit of the convicts who escaped from the Folsom prison. An unknown man was killed near Davisvllle, Cal., Friday night. While his Identity has not been established, it Beems almost certain that he was not one of the convicts. The man was seen acting queerly near a farm house, and when called upon by officers to surrender, started to run. The officers fired at him, killing him instantly. Since his death the man has been identified as one who has been In the vicinity sev eral days hunting work. He was con sldered deranged mentally.
