Miya honored as teacher of the year Lana Hiskey NEBO DISTRICT Sharon Miya, Diamond Fork Junior High science teacher, was awarded the Science Educator of the Year by Utah Museum of Natural History (UMNH). Mrs. Miya will be. recognized at a luncheon held in her honor on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007 at 11:45. a.m. at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City. She will also receive a cash prize of $ 1,000. Mrs. Miya currently teaches eight-grade integrated science and ninth-grade earth science classes at Diamond Fork Junior High in Spanish Fork. Sharon came to the Spanish Fork community with a wide array of educational and practical experience. Prior to working there, she was employed by NASA with the Aerospace Education Services Program. Sharon has always exemplified a high degree of maturity, creativity and professionalism in the teaching of science. Mrs. Miya was nominated by Principal Troy Peterson and Assistant Principal Peter Fawson. The nomination letter read in part: "Sharon always demonstrates a genuine care and concern for all of her students. Sharon uses a wide range of innovative teaching strategies such as manipulatives, technology, lab projects and creative resources to enhance instruction. Sharon is one of those special individuals that would do anything to help others succeed. She has willingly taken an active part in organizing and conducting our yearly school-wide Science Fair. This year she is organizing a Science Olympiad event to involve students with in-depth inquiry activities leading to potential state-wjde competition." Honoring those who teach science is a natural for the Utah Museum of Natural History. For over thirty years, education has been at the heart of the Museum's mission. UMNH uses its collection of over a million objects and its outstanding staff of scientists and educators as well as its strong science education programs including Junior Science Academy, Scientist in the Classroom, Museum on the Move, Youth Teaching Youth, and an extensive array of summer camp programs, and ongoing adult programming to serve tens of thousands of students annually. Landmark hosts Halloween dance Brian Davenport LANDMARK In an effort to raise money for the dragon sculpture for the New Landmark High School (LHS), in Spanish Fork, the school held a Halloween Dance on Thursday Oct. 25, 2007, where students were able to donate money to the dragon sculpture. The students who attended the dance raised over $300 towards the dragon. The students also carved pumpkins that were used as decorations for the dance. After the dance was over the following day the student council took the carved pumpkins and donated them to some of the local care centers, and people in the neighborhood surrounding the LHS. Active on offense, defense and special teams, Gardner spent a lot of time on the field for Spanish Fork. Some highlights of the season included an interception against Lone Peak during the play-in game, and an interception and touchdown against Lehi. Matt is the son of Mike and Shauna Gardner of Spanish Fork. With a 3.95 GPA, some of Ashlee's favorite classes are Ambassadors, History and Medical Anatomy. She enjoys reading, singing, playing the piano and guitar, exercising and watching movies.
