SF Park & Rec Notes Matt Marziale SF PARKS & REC. Baseball and Softball Uniform Check in All baseball and softball players grades 3-12 should plan to attend awards day and uniform check-in. Awards will be presented to league and city tournament champions and best sportsmanship winners. Second place finishers will also receive awards. Girls should return clean and complete uniforms to the Russell Swenson Ball Park on Wednesday, July 25, 2007 from 5-6 p.m. Boys should return uniforms on Thursday, July 26, 2007 from 5-6 p.m. Coaches' Steak Fry All head coaches and assistant coaches are invited to the annual coaches' steak fry. This dinner is put on by the Spanish Fork Parks and Recreation department as a way of saying thanks to volunteer coaches for their time and efforts with the youth of our community. Coaches should bring their spouses. Please RS.VP at 798-4068. Dinner will be served Monday, Aug. 6, 2007. Tackle and Flag Football It is time to sign up for Spanish Fork youth tackle and flag football leagues. Boys entering grades 3-9 may sign up for the league of their choice. Camps for these boys are included in registration fees and start in two weeks. All players will learn valuable game skills from Spanish Fork High School Coach Matt Christensen and his players and staff. Sign up now. Youth Soccer Boys and girls kindergarten-9th grade should sign up now for fall soccer. Registration is being taken at the Spanish Fork Recreation office. All leagues are gender specific. Games are played weekday evenings starting in late August, A two-day camp will be held Aug. 6-7, 2007, so get in now and be ready for the whistle. Fiesta Days Kickball Tournament This adults (high school age to 99 years old) event has become a hit in the Fiesta Days programming. Now in its forth year, adults male and female return back to the legendary days on the playground to compete for the kickball champion crown. Two divisions are open for registration; men's and coed. Games will be played Friday, July 20 at the Sports Park. A team fee of $60 needs to be paid by Monday, July 16. Get your friends and family and sign-up. SF Red Sox compete for national title The Spanish Fork Red Sox were selected to play in the Cooperstown Dreams Park and American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Invitational tournament, during the week of June 23, 2007 in the magical mythical home of baseball, Cooperstown, N.Y. The tournament is open to athletes 12 and under with 96 teams participating weekly. In addition to competing against teams from around the country, the members of the Spanish Fork Red Sox will be enshrined in the prestigious American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame. The team spent seven days and six nights in the baseball village playing double headers for a seed in the championship tournament. The team won five straight games placing them 27th in the 96 team bracket. The team played exceptionally well, including their 12 home runs. Taylor Snyder, Cooper Beck, Brock Nelson and Brady Bate each hit three home runs. The rest of the team hit great too, with Colton Olsen hitting .686 batting average and Brock Nelson hitting .588 for the week. Cooper Beck. Taylor Snyder, Conner Johnson, Brock Nelson, Branson Ashworth and Haley Ingram all pitched exceptionally well. Branson and Haley threw a one hit, 9-0 shut out. The defense was also solid with great plays from Cooper Thorpe, Gus Snell, Colton Olsen and Zac Lundell. The Spanish Fork Red Sox are coached by Chad Beck and Cory Snyder. All teams are winners at Cooperstown. By stepping up to the plate, regardless of the outcome, the players have built a sense of pride, dignity and accomplishment for having participated and become part of history. Cooperstown Dreams Park is a place in time where the players are their own heroes. Teams are made up of players over 30 years of age with four players 25-29 allowed. Team registration is being taken at Spanish Fork Parks and Recreation now. Registration deadline is July 18. Literally, you can place a bright copper penny in the slot along with two quarters, and crank the handle a few times to produce any of three different celebratory images for this years Fiesta Days: a bucking bull, fireworks, or the American flag. The very first citizens to utilize the coin machine were Joseph Trujillo, nine, and his two brothers, Alex,' 14, and David, 18. The penny pincher will be on hand at the Rodeo Fairgrounds and on the east side of the library during the Fiesta Days activities. It's permanent location is in the City Office lobby next to utilities office. / |
