Show N I WS Spanishh Fork Covering what matters most JV Lady Dons lose to AF in final game Scott Elliott STAFF WRITER The Lady Dons JV • basketball team played the American Fork Cavemen Feb. 13. This was thefinalgame of the season for the Lady Dons. This JV team has had an up and down season, but has the talent to build upon for next year. The Cavemen started off this game by blistering the nets. The Lady Dons struggled to get the basketball in the hole. It was as if there was an invisible plate, or perhaps unseen saran wrap stretched tightly over the rim of the basket for the Lady Dons. The Cavemen dominated the boards in the first half of the game. The first quarter found the Dons down by a score of 18-3. Fortunately for the Dons, they came back somewhat in the second quarter with nice drives to the basket by Katelyn Elliott to bring the score to 26-12 at half time. The second half started off with Spanish Fork scoring six unanswered points as Katelyn continued her strong offensive play. However, the Lady Cavemen countered with baskets of their own to keep the score within reach. The Lady Cavemen Kept a comfortable 10-point lead throughout the third quarter, which ended 36-26. Elliott led the JV ladies against AF with 14 points. Lady Dons made a valiant effort to come back in this game with the tenacious defense of Jesse Anderson, Lindzee Thurgood, Katelyn Elliott, Nicole Adams and Tasha Sanborn. Jesse Anderson came alive going fourfor-four from the field in this game, which included a threepoint shot. The Dons got to within three points with two minutes left in the game. This is when foul shots became important for both teams. Unfortunately, Spanish Fork was disastrous at the foul line, while the Cavemen excelled, hitting all of their foul shots. This game was won and lost at the foul line in the waning minutes of the game. The game score ended 56-42 in a losing effort for the Lady Dons. "She's the best I've ever seen in eight years — both girls and boys ... she's one of the best," said McGuire, and it shows when she plays the game. Coach McGuire went on to say that she may not be the best overall athlete, but she is a great basketball player because she works hard and has good ethics. Jenna mentioned that she is always trying to get better by going out on the court and working hard. "The game is about finding your weaknesses and making them your strengths," Jenna said. One of her best strengths, as shown in the stats, is excellent shooting. McGuire said that she is not afraid to get aggressive and attack the basket, or get in there and pick up a foul. She's also a good defender and teammate, which really makes her an all-around player. Others who know her seem to say the same. When she was growing up, even her neighbors could see that she was going to be great. When she was little she could be found outside every day, shooting baskets for hours. Jenna simply stated that it is what she has liked to do since she was a child. But out on the real court she plays more than just a game. When she's "in the zone" she loves it, and does all she can to keep shooting so she can really put the ball up there and score for her team. Some people call it luck, others skill, but Jenna seems to be keeping it up, nonetheless. She says the best part of the game is the emotions when she makes a shot. "It's the best feeling in the world — I love that feeling — it's just fun," she said. When playing in a game, she said it helps to talk to yourself and pump yourself up. She also said it is important to know what you have to do and do it. She said it is important to make goals from the start. It's what keeps her going in a game. Of course, not every ball she shoots will go in, and when she is down she said it's the worst feeling, but she also said, "You can't get down even if you want to. ... Keep going." If she misses one here or there, she will try to make it up somewhere else in the game. She can do that by hard-nosing it, putting off lots of intensity, and playing hard, which she seems to do with every step on the court. It carries her through as she continues to play girls' basketball and show her talents in both high school and college, getting better all the time. As she said herself, "I'm working every day ... and am always trying to get better." Practice, practice, practice ... perfect. 872 N.
