Show N" i : w s- Spanish Fork Covering what matters most FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2006 • A5 Obituary Wesley J. Steele holds meeting The Thalian Club meeting was held Sept. 6, 2006, at the'Chillon. Twentytwo members were present and others were excused due to illness or other reasons. Donna Measom, our new Thalian President, welcomed everyone by saying how fit and tan we looked. She then told a short story called "The Trade." Ginny Hansen was the hostess and she led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Mildred Ward gave the prayer. Jackie Voorhees handed out Thalian handbooks to all present. Chef Ron Spotten then told us what we could expect for the following year in the way of food and hors d' oeuvres. The only words that come to mind were "Wow! Bring it on." The luncheon and hors d'oeuvres were delicious. A get well card was signed and sent to Carol Thomas saying "Hurry back Carol." Netella Montague was voted in as a new member. Each member was asked to tell about their summer and the fun things they did. The humor and jokes were fun to listen to. A lot of laughter was shared. We sang happy birthday to members in September and the summer months. Chorister Jane B. Nelson and pianist Ruth Leifson led the group in singing. Jane B. gave each of us a bird whistle to use as we sang the following songs: "Whistle While You Work," "Give A Little Whistle," "Let's All Sing Like the Birds Sing." The Thalian song was also sung. The next meeting will be Oct. 4, 2006. fc>-°: ; * Local Buddy Walk scheduled From the end of September throughout the month of October, National Down Syndrome Awareness Month, more than 260 Buddy Walks will occur throughout the United States. Up With Downs will hold their Buddy Walk on Sept. 23,2006 at the Orem Community Hospital walking track, 331 North 400 West, Orem. Registration will take place on the grassy area on the southeast side of the track, behind the Kids on the Move building. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with the walk beginning at 10 a.m. We will also have a 5K race this year with registration beginning at 8 a.m. Check our website for current information, www. a wide range of concerned upwithdowns.org. individuals to reach out The Buddy Walk was to friends, family and codeveloped by the National workers to promoteawareness Down Syndrome Society and inclusion for people with in 1995 to bring together Down Syndrome and to raise funds for local and national education, research and advocacy programs. This is the 8th annual walk for the Up With Downs, Down Syndrome Support Group. Children, young adults and adults with Down Syndrome, family members, friends, health care professionals, corporate teams and members of the community are invited to participate. More than 225,000 individuals participated in a Buddy Walk in 2005. Since - the Buddy Walk was created in 1995, over 1,500,000 people have participated in a Buddy Walk worldwide. Bring a wagon or stroller if you'd like. All are welcome! There will be one grand prize. Other prizes include scooters, Buddy Walk water bottles and car magnets. A Buddy Walk T-shirt is included with the registration. We will also draw for awesome prizes to be given away to registered walkers. For more information please go to upwithdowns.org.. Wesley J. Steele, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully on Sept. 9, 2006 after a long and courageous fight with Parkinson's disease. His devoted wife, Marjean, was at his side. Wesley was bom in Goshen on Dec. 8, 1933 to parents Claude and Ruby Smith Steele. He graduated . from Payson High School in 1952, and later graduated from Utah Valley Trade Tech. After serving in the United States Army in the late '50s, he was employed at Geneva Steel for 32 years. Wes married Marjean Swasey on Nov. 10, 1961. They raised two sons together in Spanish Fork, where the couple continued to reside throughout their 45 years of marriage. Wes enjoyed the outdoors, was an avid hunter and loved to travel. He was also very proud of his well-kept yard where family and friends regularly gathered for parties and gettogethers. A devoted father and grandfather, Wes never missed a single baseball game of his sons, and was a regular onlooker at the many games of his grandsons and granddaughters later on. He was also a talented carpenter. He was a gentle, soft-spoken man full of kindness and generosity. by all whose hearts his life touched. Wesley is survived by his wife, Marjean; his younger son, Harold; sister, Lael Larson; and brothers, Don, Mark and Owen Steele. His legacy also includes nine grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren who were the light of his life in his waning years. Wes was preceded in death by his older son, Steven, who passed away in 2001. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Interment was in the Spanish Fork City Cemetery with full military honors. Condolences may be sent to the family at: www. walkerfamilymortuary.com. Anyone who sat and talked with him found he had an incredible sense of humor and a myriad of stories he was more than willing to tell. He was a fun-loving, eventempered character who found satisfaction and joy in family, nature, and in life. True, the need to slay the occasional dinosaur still rears its ugly head now and then, but look on the bright side: We now have the SPANISH FORK NEWS - good reading material and a community newspaper all in one.
