Many mining men scoffed at working with 2 ore. Despite this, a new mine was bom. principle-ma- ss But even 2 ore didnt last long. In 10 years the copper content of the ore was down to IWo. In 20 years it dropped ' to Today, Kennecott is mining ore that averages only 82 hundredths of one per cent. By standards of the past, the Bing- 1. ham Mine should have died many times. But like the cat with nine lives, its still very much alive. It continues to be the greatest copper mine in the world, pro li tU'ii ;"" j ducing about a quarter of the nation's newly mined copper. Through the years, new methods, greater efficiency and better equipment have turned into ore, millions of tons of material that was once waste. The life of the mine has been lengthened. Kennecott continues to try to lengthen the mines life by practicing good conservation. Research projects seek methods for recovering more copper from low grade ore millions of dollars are plowed back into the business for new and better equipment. Lengthening the life of the Bingham Mine means a longer life for the benefits of Kennecotts operations that help bring prosperity to our entire state.
