A " LOOK TO THE MOUNT Study of the Sermon on the Mount A by Leland H. Monson $3.95 This noted Mormon educator examines the Sermon on the Mount as the "higher law which Jesus came to earth to teach. He clearly shows how the laws taught by Jesus fulfilled and perfected the earlier laws and prophets. Here is a careful explanation of how the Sermon on the Mount can be applied to living in today's modern world. MODERN CASH STORE f Mi-s- . The old frontier rationale that too much bathing weakens the body is now receiving at least "Maybe Pilgrims Served Reef and Pork Too1 tacit endorsement from the scientific world. According to Dr. Ralph C. Richards, professor of surgery at the University of Utah Medical Center, the proportion of bacteria removed from the body by bathing is almost insignificant, probably no more than seven per cent. He says when people scrub themselves with a brush or cloth they irritate the skin and may invite greater bacterial invasion than would have been present had they never washed at all. Dr. Richards is the most recent participant in a bacterial research project which dates back some 30 years. Its original purpose was to find more efficient ways for surgeons to cleanse themselves of bacteria before beginning an operation. According to the U study, the average surgeon spends what would amount to a year of his life scrubbing his hands in preparation for surgery. But Dr. Richards says scrubbing is prob- Says National Livestock And Meat Board BLM secretary-treasur- will be er ap- pointed later. Directors cf the council are: U. S. Welcome home boys. Th.ore is some historical evidence that pork and beef graced the Pilgrims tables at the first Thanksgiving dinner according to David H. Stroud, President of the National Live Stock and Meat Board. Stroud quoted one historic as stating the women spent many days preparing for the feast; that "children were kept busy turning roast on spits, or rods, in front of open fires. What kind of roasts? he asks. They could have been venison, brought by friendly Indians, but who is to say they werent roasts of beef andor pork? We do know cattle and hogs were brought to the new colony on the Mayflower along with barrels of pickled beef and salted pork. He suggests the possibility that over the span of 347 years, traditional accounts cf that Thanksgiving may have established turkey as the main course because at that time it was a new food introduced to the Pilgrims by the Indians. At the same time stories of the first Thanksgiving simply may have souroe ttft by Don Ellison Greta Pratt returned home November 4 from Sacramento, Calif., where she attended the wedding of her grandson Melvin Isaacson to Miss Esta Smith. This foresight helped them solve their food problem much more quickly than if they killed off their future sources of meat However, since this was a very special occasion for rejoicing and feasting, its possible the ban on slaughtering livestock was lifted as part of the Thanksgiving observance. Stroud contend the reason turkey was served at Thanksgiving in those early years was the shortage of beef and pork . . . products the Pilgrims voluntarily denied themselves while they built up their herds. Since there is no shortage of pork and beef today, the people who raise feed and market meat animals do not feel ion-bound to give the Thanksgiving . . . and Christmas . . . market to the birds, he said. "Weve got nothing against turkeys, Stroud said. Scientists are not entirely sure about the source of nourishment for bacteria which inhabit the skin, but Dr. Richards says there is considerable evidence that the organisms feed chiefly on body secretions such as oil and the chemical ingredients of that individual as his own and forearms may range from 100 thousand to 100 million. Despite the variations from person to person, there is at least one consistency. The face is the dirtiest skin surface. It is between 100 and 1,000 times dirtier than the chest and particularly the back, which is almost sterile," Dr. Richards said. Comparative studies of bacteria levels on various parts of the body indicate that a child who sucks his thumb is in reality contaminating his thumb, not his mouth. He carries more bacteria cut to the playpen by sucking his thumb than he carries to his mouth. Dr. Richards does not expect any immediate changes in American hygiene habits. We are the washingeet people on earth, he said, a real perspiration. This hypothesis would help explain why body bacteria counts rearch a given point and level off whether people bathe cr not, he said. After a study of campers and hikers who stay in the field for a week or two at a time without taking a bath, Dr. Richards found that the bacterial count was always lower at the end of the week than at the beginning. According to the U surgeon, the bacterial flora of a persons society. n Burns Old Shacks -- On Novemlber 19, 1968 personnel from the Kanab District Office of the Bureau of Land Man- ;Vt.):i773.v -- agement burned three cabins upon public lands within the Orderville Gulch drainage east of Zion National Park. The structures were construct ted 16 years ago by Jack of Kanab. At that time, Mr. Mognett operated a lumbermill at the site. Since then the cabins have fallen into disrepair. They were felt to be unsightly in a scenic locale as well as creating fire and health hazards. Fred Howard, Kanab District Manager, stated that as a result of recent Federal Tort Claims Act rulings, his office did net wish to assume liability resulting from possible occupancy of the shacks. i Mog-net- When you visit Soil lake City, drop in at our friendly store.
