The idea for the workshop was presented to district officials by Moroni Jensen, Principal of Granger High School, and Student Body Faculty Advisor at Granger High, Hans Olsen. They had attended a similar leadership workshop in Ft. Collins, Colorado during the summer of 1967 and they witnessed the success of such a program in the develope-me- nt of the Student Body Officers at Granger High. Mr. Fred Petrilloof MapletonHigh School, Denver, Colorado will conduct the activities and Mr. Hans Olsen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth H. Olsen, residents of South Salt Lake, will be the director. The program will be arranged to include all types of interesting ideas . that can be put to constructive use by the Student Officers at the following High Schools: Skyline, Olympus, Granite, Kearns, Granger and Cyprus. It is to be hoped that each candidate will present what he thinks are the basic issues of the 1968 campaign to the people in such a way that every issue can stand on its own merit of truth,, then the electorate can be the judge and vote accordingly. The purpose and objective of this 5 day training is to enable newly elected Student Body Officers and .Cheerleaders to gain new ideas, develope leadership, conduct student activities and learn the values and methods of leadership at the beginning of the school year and not have to develope it as the school Democratic Convention Good Government in Making Friday and Saturday of last week the Democratic Party held its convention at Valley Music Hall. Much was said and dn.e that seemed to make it one of the finest held by the party. One of the most important parts of the convention was the sincerity with which the delegates pursued their activities in supporting and voting for their favorite cani-datNearly 100 of the delegates chosen at the Mass Meetings by the citizens of the various voting districts were there to participate. In most instances, this kind of loyalty and determination gives the party better and more capable candidates to present to the electorate on election day. Everyone couldn't win, but by their participation the losing candidates presented the convention with thoughts and ideas that could make real advancement in better governmental practices. The winners now should accept this public trust and confidence reposed in them by the at The leadership training workshop a Com- mission voted to spend $210,000 on a monthly basis to keep the busses running in Salt Lake County. Salt Lake City 14 I Three men represented the Wasatch District at the Wood Badge Training Camp at East Fork of the Bear from July 12 to the 20th. They were: Boyd Giles, Wasatch District Executive, A. Tom Armstrong, Scoutmaster, Edlredge Ward and Reed Johnson, Scoutmaster, Granite Park Ward. Thirty-thre- e men in all attended the camp. This is scout training for adults. As Tom said, "It's like going to College again. Upon arrival Friday, they divided into Patrols. Boyd Giles went into the Soaring Eagles, Tom Armstrong went into the Owls and Reed Johnson went into the Bob Whites. They had classes every day on every phase of scouting. Up at 6 a.m. - lights out at 11 p.m. In their "spare time they practiced skills, carved wooden items and made plaster casts of tracks. On Sunday they held a very in- spirational testimony meeting. The last Friday out the wives were invited to the camp feast. Each Patrol cooked part of the dinner. There was something to please every taste. President Carl Buehner and his wife were among the honored guests. He was presented with an honorary certificate from the Wood Badge Group, along with a King Sized replica of the Wood Beads. With the knowledge they received these men can now come home and teach our sons needed skills and help to make of them better Americans.
