Show Friday, May 5, 1961 SOUTH SALT LAKE HERALD Page 3 Republican Apathy u Ml jama We attended the elections of the Young Republican League of Utah last Saturday. S3 This energetic, basically Goldwater Conservative oriented group, demonstrates much more dynamics and direction than do the placid, elder mahouts. It is entirely possible that the Young Republicans of Utah could have the State of Utah well under their wing by 1964. The record of the Republican Party in Utah has been other than inspiring since 1946. In particular, the area south of 17th South to 45th South, from 9th East to 12 West is virtually untouched by Republican Party workers. During the last campaign this writer sought to help in this area and some of the workers who were sent into the area to help the Republican Party were received either with apathy or indifference. In more than one instance the Chairman for the party answered with words to the effect, "Why bother, the Democrats have my district sewed up. You're wasting your time." If this is their attitude, then perhaps It If time that "younger blood" stepped in. ' We pick the newly elected State Chairman of the Young Republicans, Mr. Donald O. Martinson, as just the man to bring life Into the Republican Party. The best way is to offer a difference in alms, It has been amply goals, and philosophies. proved that the Tom Dewey approach of "Me, too," does not work. Holds High School Day Open House for State's Seniors LL Several Utah high school students ponder over which departments they will visit during the High School Day program which will be held at the University of Utah, Saturday, May 6. Senior students from all over the state are invited to attend the event which is designed to explain to participants the enjoyment of learning. Information will be presented on admissions, registration, housing, fraternities and sororities, and ROTC. Students will have an opportunity to visit various departments including medicine, law, art, business, sclupture, and others. Regardless of the university a student plans to attend, High School Day will provide a welcome preview of university life. Late registrations will be ac- cepted for several more days. Students may contact their school principal to make arrangements to attend. Did you know that the United States is the only nation to become a major nation in the history of the world which has not gained its wealth through force or taxation of its citizens? That is, up until 1913. But, oh, look at us now! One thing that can be said about Salt Lake is that it probably has well filled sugar bowls after last week end. The Tax Foundation recently counted the number of "bidden taxes" that are imposed on use. It found in every-da- y that there are 100 taxes on an egg, 116 on a man's suit, 150 on a woman's hat, 151 on a loaf of bread and 600 on a house! In .case you're wondering who ultimately pays these taxes, the answer is simple. You Electrical Gifts !
