Ogden, with other depot baseball team accounted for three of the five runs scored against Joe DiMaggio’s Santa rough, Ana air base nine in the first game of a double-header at Ogden last Sunday. They are Lt. Lail and Benefeil. Lail, Sports Tipster Leonard Adams Possibly your fishing has slacked off somewhat these ‘‘dog days.” This is a natural phenomenon in angling. Trout are off their feed somewhat, and are reJuctant to move from deep spring holes. One method I rely on now is nymph flies fished deep and using small sizes, No. 12, 14 and 16. My experienceis that the fish in small streams frequently take these tid-bits in preference to other food in hot weather. In larger streams and lakes grasshoppers and minnowsare readily accepted. Fishing should still be interesting enough, however. Several good catches have been reported from Blacksmith’s Fork, Logan River, South Fork, Weber and Ogden Rivers. Did you see the photo in a local paper of the kid who at shortstop, played a snappy game making two sensational stops. In the eighth, Lt. Lail grabbed Jacobs’ sizzling grounder over second base, and again he beat a man outatfirst by a hair. Benefeil got the spotlight of the evening when hefielded Bobby Adams’ hot roller, tagged DiMaggio at third and retired Adams at second. The score was 6-5 in favor of SAAB but Adams himself (Continued from Page 1) thought they were lucky to beat the All-Stars. For some fourteen years (1826 to 1840) the Hudson Bay Fur Company, the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, and the American Fur Company engaged in bitter three-sided battle for the furs of this region. The Hudson Bay Fur Company sold liquor to the Indians and their competitors were compelled to do likewise in order to ‘“‘hold their own.” Ethics were discarded and the eontest for furs became a drunken, and murderous business. If a trapper found his fur cache had been robbed he was quick to take a bloody revenge. By 1840, the American Fur Company was coming out on top, but the fur business was on the decline. ‘‘Stylish gentlemen’ were beginning to wear ‘‘silk’’ instead of ‘‘beaver furfelt’’ hats. Indian Wives The population of a trappers’ village were always a mongrel lot. Indian wives and half-breed children were the rule. On Christmas day 1840, Osborne Russell described the Ogden village as containing a Frenchman, his Flathead wife and child, a half-breed Iowa, his Nez Perce wife and two children, and fifteen lodges of Snake Indians. In 1844, Miles Goodyear constructed a cabin on the Weber river at what is now 28th street. He and his Ute wife were living there when the Mormons migrated to the region three years later. Mormons bought Goodyear in November 1847. out In 1860, the fast growing town of Ogden needed building materials. A toll road, with a toll gate at the narrow gate of Ogden Canyon, was constructed to the timber and building-stone areas. The toll-was removed in ‘time clocks at about 16:55. It seems to be Vern Rose of the same address. He got his hand in the wrong place on a Barrett jack and after being pried loose didn’t even say ‘‘darn.’’ In 1914, an artesian water works system was initiated for Ogden. Fifty-one wells were drilled in Ogden Canyon. These -wells, untouched by lake water, are now submerged under forty feet of water of the Pine View Reservoir. The Pine View Dam and Reslamation project, stores supclamation Project, stores supplementary irrigation water for more than 60,000 acres between Brigham City and South Ogden.
