The bulldoggers will have then-wor-k cut out for them, as there are on the grounds 40 head of wild Mexican steers, many of which, except in transportation, have scarce set eyes on a human. A splendid program of race has been prepared, it having been found necessary to construct a large number of additional box stalls to accommodate the entries, coming mainly from Idaho, Montana, Nevada and Wyoming, and quite a few from California. Prizes as high as $300 ara advertised for the rodeo riders. The fair exhibits this year promise to surpass anything seen here before, this applying particularly to the women's department and the livestock exhibits. . -Stadent's Exhibit of Plgf Hold Vnasnal Interest. Th etty govmunent of Chicago may be broke, bat the government of Cook county, which Includes Chicago, Is broker" still, so broke, In fact, that some no employees toaaj go no " checks. And whether they will be paid for months to com is problematical. juixt loa citj auvei uuienL, wiuca u about $18,000,000 in the red. the Cook . county treasury is so empty that Comptroller William J. Orahara is dint tat all eulunretlnth employees until the county board raises some money If it can. By the end of the fiscal year, vhlch eomes December 1, the county Is going to owe its employees. Including Judges, department beads, clerks, stenographers, road workers nd even the county board members themselves, something Ilka 12,000,-00- 0 in salaries. Caa Collect SSOMOt, Bat That's Already Spent And the county in that time is gosum ing to collect only $800,000, thesemiseeded to meet only one the 1800,000 monthly payroll. But ths county expects to collect already has been spent anyway, so employees are going to- have to pawn their watches, cut out their breakfasts and accept all Invitations to dinner they can get if they expect to survive the period of financial stringency that faces the harassed county board. The board, meanwhile, met with a committee of bankers. Including WU-llim I flaw hrcther nt t.h vice president, to obtain advice as to where, when and whether money may be obtained. But the county's credit is none too good, and the board members attend ed the conference without much hope of 11obtaining. enough to get by. The bankers now fear considerable difficulty in collecting the cash they paid out then so that county employees vutuu vaw I O Cs Proposed, Bat I O ITs DMbtfaL Despite the well known philanthropic tendencies of Chicago s money barons, it thus was feared that ths county board this time would receive nothing but a cold shoulder and that It wouldn't even be edible. The only scheme thus tar advanced which sounds at least workable, even though it may prove embarrassing, Is for the epuntr to issue I O Us In place of pay checks. But I O O'a usually ara of doubt ful value and Cook county's pledges to pay at some later date probably will be sniffed at by the local butchers, bootleggers and beauty parlor owners when approached by starving county employees. ' Furthermore, the I 'O TJ idea likely will be declared illegal, authorities said, and even if it isn't. Cook county will have its own troubles redeeming them when Income doesnt promise to be any higher than usual. The only possible ray of light b in the faint hops that voters at an election November i will approve a I per cent increase in their tax rate. And even that is a very, very scant possibility, what with taxpayers and voters already complaining that their rates arc too high. 1 . ..:.aUtfV4.WUiDIJE. JVOer company.
