Show CANAL RESOLUTION IS DISAPPROVED BY MAYOR MAYOR- I Mayor Thompson today disapproved the resolution of t the City Council re relating relating relating re- re lating to th the proposed agreement to be Into by Salt Lake Lale City canal companies The Tue resolution provides provides provides pro pro- vides that each of the canal companies shall pay the city 1500 for money expended expended cx- cx ex ex- by the city In making surveys grading and purchasing land in the vl- vl JY of Utah lake and Jordan river It Is further provided that the city shall then join with the four canal companies companies com com- panics in the Install installation tion of ot a pumping plant to cost not to exceed to tobe tobe tobe be located at the outlet of Utah lake Upon this point the Mayor says that the plan is too experimental for the city to expend upon He also calls attention at at- teatime to the fact as shown in a report re report report re- re port from the City Engineer that the city fity has expended in surveys grading and ald purchasing land etc the sum of and he is therefore of ot the ion that the canal companies should be required to pay such an amount as would be m more re in proportion to the sums already expended by the city He also agrees with the Engineer that there is doubt of the success of the pumping plant On this point the Engineer sa says s 's If It the water is pumped out of Utah lake lale below low water the supply will be uncertain an and all depends upon the precipitation the following season To this the Mayor adds If It the pumping plant Is installed and the water is pumped out ut below low water It would necessitate continual pumping below the he low water line especially if the precipitation precipitation precipitation tation for tor several seasons would not be sufficient to raise the lake to the mark that is commonly called compromise level It is also pointed out that dur thir- during ing several seasons past the waters o of the lake have not touched compromise level In conclusion the Mayor says sas that he heartily approves of that portion of the resolution which provides s that the city and the canal compares join in suits which may be necessary to quiet the title to the waters of the lake and river and also to prevent an any interference with the water rights of the city and canal companies |
