Hayford, a former newspaper man, was found in a room at the Railroad Exchange this morning. The man .was dead, and it is believed that he took poison with suicidal intent I late Monday night." Hayford was born at Laramie, Wyo., where his father edited a paper for many years. Later the elder Hayford was - a member of the Judiciary. He died two years ago. Hayford, a consumptive, swallowed a "dose of 'poison, presumably pre-sumably morphine, '.about - midnight Monday,' and died in' his room" in the Railroad : Exchange, rooming-house, South Temple and Third "West streets. Then a chill of horror shook' her as she remembered" re-membered" that' she had -entered Hay-ford's- room ; yesterday . morning at about the same time, and that the form was then, in the same position as - it was this morning. The woman did not stay to make further Investigation, but screaming, fled to the .office, where she told her suspicions to the proprietor. ' An examination by' him showed that the woman's suspicion waa correct, and that Hayford had been dead for some time. Coroner Is Notified, t The Police department was notified at once, and the desk sergeant in turn notified Justice of the" Peace Dana T. Smith, acting coroner, who accompanied. accom-panied. Duty Sergeant John Hemple and Patrolman Henry Johnson to the dead man's room. There they found the body as the chambermaid had left It, and after an examination of the room, found a note -asking that Mrs. Hayford be notified of Hayford's death. The name and telephone number of a woman friend of Mrs. Hayford was also al-so left, and it was asked that she also be notified. The note bore no signa-ture. signa-ture. but It is . thought to have been written by , Hayford Just before his death. V . An examination of the body showed that Hayford had probably died late Monday night. The body was discolored discol-ored badly, but decomposition had not set .In. . As soon , as possible the corpse was removed from the. hotel and taken to-the t morgue of Undertaker 3. D." Evans, where it will be held pending the receipt of .advices from relatives of the dead man. . , ' Hayford was a son of District Judge ' Hayford of Laramie, Wyo., who died about two years ago. ' . , . , Young Hayford had been a newspaper newspa-per man at Sandy, Utah, where he had conducted a small paper for some time, but this had not been a sticcess. After falling in this venture Hayford came to the city and was employed for three and one-half years, at the county Infirmary In-firmary as steward. Became Dissipated. ' Hayford lost this position some time ago. Hayford was also employed at St. Mark's hospital for some time. Hayford had threatened several times recently to kill himself, but no attention was paid to these threats, as they were thought to have been caused . by drink. When he was sober he was careful in his speech and made no threats to end his life. Hayford was the father of four children, chil-dren, the eldest of .whom is about 8 years old, and the youngest about l year old. Their mother is at present . visiting with friends in Ogden. Hay-i Hay-i f ord also has a brother, AJlyn Hayford. ' a switchman employed by the Oregon Short Line, and living at 525 West North Temple 'street. Hayford's mother lives in California, and he has a sister living in Cheyennt, and another living in New York, |
