Show THE "DESERET NEWS" DENIAL. Angus Apologizes to Bishop Sharp, Bat Then He Never Said It. Angus M. Cannon, like young McMurrin, McMur-rin, is not far off. He apologizes through the Deseret Neivs last evening for the bitter and venomous attack made on Bishop John Sharp at a North Jordan meeting recently, and characterizes the article published in a recent issue of the Democrat as "a base falsehood. The only thing contained in our report of that North Jordan sermon which is positively j denied in the News article is the matter I of Cannon's receiving, while at the Pen, a spring mattress as a gift from Mr. Sharp, .and afterwards, when learning j the source of the boon, throwing it to the dogs. Our information on the question of the mattress may have been inaccurate, as it was in most part gleaned from Mr. Cannon's own remarks on that occasion; but he certainly said enough on the mattress subject to justify the inference. We did not pretend to quote the exact words of mac cnaracteristic tirade of Brother Angus, and this is singularly fortunate for him as well as the Neivs, in that it affords the latter the opportunity to sweepingly assert that he "never used the language attributed to him." The funny part of the whole business is the way the ex-recorder endeavors to slop over with affection for Mr. Sharp in this apology through the News. He says: "Hon. John Sharp, among his many close associates, has no warmer or truer friend than President Angus M. Cannon." If this isn't real, genuine home-made taffy, what is it?. The fact is Angus did preach that sermon, and did go after the Bishop in a most violent and disparaging manner, and we have abundant evidence to prove it. It transpires that the stake president, however, is almost dailv asking favors in the nature of passes, etc., at Mr. Sharp's hands, and is just a little bit afraid that the Bishop will get his Scotch up and close down on these very desirable courtesies. cour-tesies. The fact reminds us of another instance of petrified gall where a good brother was in the Utah Central office, not long since, applying for a half rate or pass, and just as he was nhnnt. tn i the favor handed to him by the agent Bishop Sharp happened to come in and, offering his hand said, "How do you do, Brother ?" The Pharisaical saint, in whose mind the Bishop's action before Judge Zane was fresh and impressive, refused re-fused to take the proffered hand, and in a dignified and emphatic tone said:"I don't know you." |
