Show AN OFFENSIVE PARTISAN 1 rtis somewhat unusual to see i Judge L of Election an active canvasser for the yvotea of citizens and when it is seen f f tbeWshould be a denunciation of such practices In Utah we are accustomed to many strange sights at election times t and we are wont to hear everything of a I doubtful nature attributed to the dominant i domi-nant party That that party has 1 sins in abundance and which are L1 1 patent to all everyone knows but the 1 1 j solicitation of votes by Election Judges 4 yesterday was the work of Republicans i The public will want to know who they were and they are entitled to know too Those who did this were Election Judges Louis Ifyams and Sheldon at the City Hall the voting place for the Fifth I Precinct Mr Hyams was the more active of the two and when he was I ir remonstrated with by a gentleman present pres-ent who asked him if he did not think I 1 it somewhat in bad taste and improper j for an Election l Jifdge n f tojfsolicit w votes i j from people he replied that hcj I was going 1o do ail lie could to i help his party His partylfc is needless j to say is the Republican or Liberal j party and it was the Liberal ticket for j which he was working i No Election Judge no matter what his I politics may be has any right to prostitute prosti-tute his office in any such manner and those who appointed him to office should investigate the case Such things should I not be whether a man be a Republican j a Peoples party man or a Democrat and his conduct would be equally as I reprehensible and offensive no matter for what ticket an Election Judge might be canvassing And such is the result of I having a nonpartisan Commission appoint ap-point all election officers It is somewhat some-what of a new departure to have the General Government pay Election Judges I for canvassing and electioneering for the candidates of a particular party Elsewhere Else-where such proceedingswould be characterized char-acterized as an outrage upon all citizens and they approach very near to the work of the Teachers in the Peoples party Appointing such men to be Election Judges is of a piece with appointing a candidate for Representative to the Legislature Legis-lature to declare the result of an election in the result of which he is deeply interested inter-ested But the names of the great men who do such things are the warrant for such proceedings being straight |
