Show OCTOBER 6, 1987 Cougars find easy sailing against Aggies... but Utes get shot down by Air Force Academy, 48-2- 7 By GARY R. BLODGETT Sports Editor for academic reasons. The defensive star for the Cougars against the Ags was sophomore Eddie Green, a ot If BYU football Coach LaVell Edwards has a problem, its who will get the starting nod for Saturday afternoons encounter with Wyoming. For University of Utah Coach Jim Fassel, it will be a matter of getting his Running Utes back on the winning track after the Utes were shot down by the Cadets of the U.S. Air 7 Force Academy last Saturday at the in Colorado academy Springs, Colo. Utah will be returning to the unfriendly turf of Colorado this time to Ft. Collins, for a Western Athletic Conference game with the Rams beginning at noon. Recent performances by the Cougars have Coach Edwards smiling. Were finally getting our running game together and this should give us a attack for Wyoming, he said. And were going to need all we can muster because Wyoming is a real good team. It could be a case of who has the best kicking game, and of course, who takes advantage of the mistakes. Coach Edwards isnt smiling when he hears the word: turnovers. There were 10 fumbles in the last game between BYU and the Utah State Aggies. Each team recovered three opponent miscues and the Cougars twice intercepted the Ags while USU stole one aerial from BYU. But I think we have our worked out, said Coach Edwards. Most of our miscues were on the snap from center, something that has rarely occurred with our quarterbacks because it is so second nature." The Cougars will carry momentum into riding on the Saturdays tilt with Wyoming heels of a convincing 4 win over the Aggies last week. Saturdays game will be played in Provo with a 1 :30 p.m. kickoff. There will be no local television coverage of this game, and a sellout crowd is expected. But the Cowboys, too, will have momentum 0 win for this encounter after a surprising 48-2- well-balanc- fumble-proble- m 45-2- 52-1- over highly touted San Diego State last weekend. The WAC win for Wyoming was not surprising, but the high score was shocking to everyone but Cowboy fans. This should be the pivotal game of the season for both of us, said Coach Edwards. The game is crucial as far as the WAC standings are concerned and its a must win for both teams. He noted that some of the defensive secondary starters who have been on the injured list should be ready for action against Wyoming which gives the Cougar coach a problem I like having because I dont know who will get the starting nod. Coach Edwards said he will announce later in the week who will start, but indicated that the new players who performed so well against the Aggies in replacement of the injured players will also see a lot of playing time. For example, Mike Salido who was promg fullback to being a starter oted from was very impressive gaining against the Ags 67 yards rushing and scoring two touchdowns. He also caught six passes for 29 yards. And what about senior running back Tom Tuipulotu who carried five times for 36 yards and who scored a one a 22 yard gainer TD? Or Alema Harrington? He packed the pigskin only once for five yards but that, too, was for a Cougar touchdown. Defensively, Rodney Rice and Rodney Thomas are still out with injuries at comerback, which means that of eight starters in the linebacker and secondary corps who started the at one time first game, only one has not been benched disabled or the on list, or another third-strin- from Ogden High School. He 3, led the team in defensive points with five unassisted tackles, two assists, had one fumble recovery, and caused a fumble. Quarterback Rod Jensen was outstanding in his passing game, hitting 24 of 35 passes for 288 yards, and running back Mike O'Brien had his best performance of the year with 10 carries for 51 yards. He also hauled in three passes. The Cougars dominated the Aggies in nearly but had difficulty defensing all departments the Ags screen and slant passes. Quarterback Brent Snyder connected on 29 of 50 passes for 324 yards most of them to Kendall Smith but couldnt score. In (eight for 101 yards) the first half, the Ags were inside the Cougars 30 yard line four times and failed to put points on the board. Brett Payne led USU rushers with 41 yards on seven carries and two TDs. In addition to Smith, Pat Newman caught six passes for 48 yards and one touchdown and Ron Wade pulled in five catches for 72 yards, the longest for 34 yards. It was nip and tuck through the first quarter (3-before Jensen hit Travis McBeth with a line and Mike Salido pass on the three-yar- d plunged in for his first collegiate score early in the second period. Jensen faked a pass and then tucked the ball under his arm and scampered 25 yards for BYUs next touchdown making the score 17-- 6 after Dene Garner kicked his second field goal. The Cougars opened the game up in the second half on a good combination of pass and run series. OBrien led the Cougar parade by setting up one touchdown and racing 22 yards for another. With the Cougs leading USU moved the ball inside the 0 with just one second left on the clock. Everyone in the stands more knew what the final play would than 65,800 245-pound- er 3) 45-1- be. and it was. It would be a Hail Mary With Snyder throwing, the pass hung in the air for several seconds. Then, five players leaped for the floating ball, and tapped it into the hands of Kendall Smith who was trotting into the endzone. The play worked and the Aggies had narrowed the final score to 45-2- Air When Dowis finally took a sideline rest, with the speedy, decepthe Falcons leading tive and very talented cadet had carried the ball d from the wishbone offense for a 38-1- 3, single-hande- 241 yards. But the Utes didnt help themselves any with seven fumbles plus letting a short kickoff fall untouched and recovered by the Falcons. It was a long day for the Utes offensive line trying to keep the pursuing pressure off their, quarterback. And the Utah defense had a miserable time trying to (1) discover the ball carrier, and (2) to down the ball carrier. Ute Coach Jim Fassel said he was disappointed in the intensity of his players. Its the first time that I havent been satisfied with effort of the team, he said. the The loss dropped the Utes to 2 overall and one win against two losses in WAC play.
