Provo. - Ludlow Stresses Benefits of CUP Lynn S. Ludlow, general manager of the Central Utah District Water Conservancy talked with the Daily Herald in Friday terms harsh concerning the Central Utah Project which now faces its most critical obstacles. "We should consider the benefits to Utah from the Central Utah Project when we consider the minimal environmental trade-offs,- " he stated. "When we talk about our environment, we should talk about trout streams and forested mountain sides, and hiking. But, at the same time, we also must talk about providing enought water so that our children can continue to live here in Utah; so Utah farmers can improve more of our arid land, providing more and better foodstuffs; and we must talk about such subjects as being able to water our lawns. We must talk about Utah's total environment," he emphasised. "The environmental trade-off- s required by the Central Utah Project have been studied, is really very small when compared to the tremenr'ous benefits which will come to Utah as a result of the Central Utah Project," be said. He then talked about tradeoffs. "The fact is that we must give up seven miles of stream to enlarge the storage capacity of Strawberry Reservoir. But for those seven miles of stream we get increased recreational value from the reservoir itself, and the con'rolled use of that water downstream during late summer and fall when we need it, rather than the flooding in the spring," he explained. Talking about recent pressures against the prject Mr. Ludlow said, "Opponents of the Central Utah Project contend that Utah has plenty of water. This simply is not true. The fact is that areas of Salt Lake County are today living on borrowed water." "We do not have the surplus water that environmentalists claim we have. If we were to use all the surface and water along the V'asatch front-o- ne of the alternates and studied again," poposed by the Sierra Club-would dry up the Great Salt Mr. Ludlow pointed out. "The potential harm to Utah's Lake, including the managed and environment is minimal, even unmanaged wtien considered by itself and it sanctuaries," he asserted. back-packin- g d we wildlife OCE8LIY MEMOniAlS 90 Yean of Experlente in the Creation of Monument! and Marlon: Exceptional Savings!'. - - "The Governor and Mr. Dan Lawrence, Director of the Utah Division of Water Resources will go with us to express to Commissioner Stamm in the strongest terms possible our wish that the Environmental on the Impact Statement Bonneville Unit of the Central Utah Project be forwarded immediately from the Bureau of Reclamation to the Secretary of Interior for further forwarding to the Council on Environmental Quality," Clyde Ritchie, Heber City, president of the 12 county Central Utah Water Conservancy District said.
