' "' Kristy Maxfield, Miss Pleasant (Grove; Jeana Adam son, Miss American Ameri-can Pork; Jamie Evans, Miss Lehi; and Nanette Pearson, Miss Utah County signed in at pageant headquarters head-quarters Tuesday to begin the week 'long pageant events which culminate culmi-nate with the naming of the new Miss Utah Saturday evening. ' Average age of the 66 con tea-, tants is 19. Eight young women have a 3.4 GPA at their school, making it the most frequently earned GPA of the group whose average GPA is a 3.33. The highest 'GPA is a 4.0. Brigham Young University currently cur-rently educates 15 of the Miss Utah .hopefuls. Utah State University comes in second with nine candidates candi-dates attending, and the University of Utah is a close third with eight of its students running for the title. Fourteen more contestants attend at-tend colleges or universities around Utah, while only one ventures outside out-side the Beehive State to obtain her education. The remaining seven are Jecent high school graduates who ave the ambition of continuing their educational pursuits. . Each of these young womenhave a variety of talents, but are limited to one talent display. Twenty-two competitors have chosen to perform a vocal solo. These solos range in type from country to opera, with little bit of everything in between. Dance and piano are the second and third most chosen talent to be judged, with 16 dances to be per-' per-' formed and 14 piano solos to be played. Four individuals have chosen cho-sen a vocaldance combination performance, per-formance, while three will play the violin. There will also be one of each of these talents performed flute solo, dramatic interpretation, vocalpiano vo-calpiano combination, harp solo, and a marimba performance. Kristy Maxfield is performing a vc cal number for the talent portion of the pageant Nanette Pearson will perform a dance, Jamie Evans, a piano selection and Jeana Adam son, a vocaldance. Each young woman has also performed per-formed a service project in their local community with each contestant contes-tant choosing her own issue and designing a service project in conjunction con-junction with her platform. Trent Sessions, 18, of Orem severed sev-ered his thumb and seriously in fared his hand in an accident last Tuesday at Quintek in Iindon. . v According to Da vsVickers, Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove Medical Officer, the man was working at a tablesaw when his hand was accidently cut His thumb was severed and the saw cut halfway half-way through the palm of his hand. He was taken by Pleasant Grove Ambulance to American Fork Hospital Hos-pital where his condition was evaluated evalu-ated and then he was transported by Life Flight to LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City. In other police matters, officers arrested a 33-year-old male for simple assault following a domestic squabble in which the man reportedly report-edly struck his wife. An automobile which had been reported stolen over a year ago in Lehi was found in Pleasant Grove last week. Pleasant Grove Det. Cody Cullimore called the Lehi Police Dept. and they joined Cullimore in recovering the vehicle. ' A burglary was reported at a Lindon business on June 9. According Accord-ing to Officer Jay Thornton, someone some-one broke a window to gain entry to the building, opened a door, drove a vehicle up to the door and loaded about $8,000 worth of tools inside. The window was valued at $25. There are no suspects. Someone entered a Lindon home on June 8 through a basement window win-dow and took two binders of baseball base-ball cards from oneroom and 12 sets ofbaseball cards from anotherroom. t V... They had no money in the business office. There was $50 damage to each of the window frames. A 26-year-old male from Midvale was arrested on June 12 in Pleasant Grove for DUI. The arresting officers offic-ers were Clark Nielsen and Bert Bean. A one car accident occured on June 7 at 896 E. Orchard, according to police officers. Michelle Williams .was driving her car when she reached for something beside her and the vehicle turned right and hit some broken chunks of cement which had been left on the side of the road. There was $ 1,000 damage to her car and she sustained injuries to her arm and wrist She was treated at the scene by Pleasant Grove Ambulance personnel and was taken to the hospital by private vehicle. 0 Budget: Where to put workers? A shortfall of about $130,000 is anticipated in 1993-94 without the increase. Over the past few years thecity has used its surplus to cover the increases so that they did not have to raise rates. They can no longer afford to do this. Mills said that there was increased in-creased costs from more flow, more BOD'S to process, etc. He said that Pleasant Grove places fourth among 10 Utah County cities with a $1,000 sewer hookup fee. The base rate for Pleasant Grove's monthly sewer service fee is ranked seventh. The city serves 3,442 homes. The city now charges $10.35 for the first 8,000 gallons. Mills noted that the base rate should remain the same because of those on fixed incomes because they rarely use over the base rate anyway. He suggested that the city charge $1 for every 1,000 gallons over the base and $1,400 per hookup.
