Medieval Combat Club, one of the school's most active student organizations. GRAYSON WEST/PARKRECORD Timm Nawrocki is a co-founder of Park City high's Medieval Combat Club. By JARED WHITLEY Of the Record staff Timm Nawrocki is the Park Cily High School salutatorian by just a hair. His GPA is just .02 lower than valedictorian Jonathan Koenig's. Nawrocki credits his good grades to hard work, but is very grateful to those who have helped him along the way. "Probably to the teachers first of all. because at Park City they're pretty good teachers," Nawrocki said. "Then after that, probably my parents because they encouraged me to work hard." Charles Matthews has been Nawrocki's favorite teacher, and AP physics C has been his favorite class. "That's the hardest class I've ever taken so far because I didn't have any background classes in physics, so I guess I had to try harder in thai class," Nawrocki said. "I didn't know anything so that really made everything more interesting and it moved quickly." Taking hard classes has been the hallmark of Nawrocki's high school career. He's taken 11 AP classes, including two calculus classes, Spanish language, and three history classes. "I liked the more difficult classes a lot more than the easy ones because I always get bored in the easy ones," Nawrocki said. "Taking more difficult classes has just been more interesting to me." Nawrocki's involvement at Park City High School has been much more than just in the classroom. He is a National Merit Finalist, was on the fencing team for one year, and is the co-president of the When the club meets Friday afternoons on the school's baseball field, anywhere from 30 to 60 members come to whack each other with homemade weapons of PVC pipe, foam, and duct tape. "We just decided it would be cool to have a club to fight in," said Nawrocki, whose favorite movie is "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Some club members truly immerse themselves in medieval fighting. Nawrocki has his own suit of armor, weighing 60 pounds with the shield, that he wears to the weekly fights. The club also makes videos of their mock battles, and won an award for one last year from the teen anti-drug campaign The Majority Report. But for Nawrocki, fighting is more than just play. In the fall, he will start classes at the University of Virginia in an ROTC program, preparatory to joining the U.S. Army. His goal is to join the infantry, either as a paratrooper or a ranger. "I've pretty much always wanted to be in the infantry or a pilot," Nawrocki said. "I really want to be in the Army because, even though there's a lot of risk in it, it'd he a really exciting job. I've talked to a few officers in the Army who said that they really find being a soldier rewarding and so that's why I want to be one." Fighting for the infantry won't be the same as in the Medieval Combat Club, but it's still good training.
