IJo said he had eaten nothing since the day before, and was very hungry The baker gave the man a pood meal, and, being interrogated as to his history and present condition, he related the following narrative, which is so romantio and interesting that we report it for the benefit of oar reader : The man gave his name as Qoorge Faunders, stating that he is a plasterer by trade, nd that his mother iires About three miles from Big Run Station, on the Marietta and Cincin-hat- i railroad, in Athens county. Mr. Saunders 6ays ho left his mother's house Jan. 3, 1875, and went ts St. Louts, where he remained for a short 'time, and then started for the Black Hills in seirok ef gold, arriving there about the first of June. He went to work immediately, and up to the 28ih of July last had succeeded in mining a larea amount of gold ore worth about $15 per ounce. It may bo stated that the ore referred to is what is known ai surface ore, not quarts, and is very rich indeed. Mr Saunders was 'in a oamp of thirty persons, who divided themselves into pirs, and erected small wooden huts, two miuers oocupying each. Suun ders occupied a hut with a man nam fl Smith. Their means of Buste nance consisted of buffalo meat, von ison and fowl, with some salt, which they carried with them from the settlements. They had no bread of any kind except a few crackers they carried with thorn, bat the supply of ' ' which was soon exhausted last while the snow winter, During was so deep as to render it necessary for them to remain ,in their huts for a long period, an Indian one day came to the door of Saunders hut in an almost exhausted condition, Btat- iog, by means of signs and gestures, that ha had j been' out hunting and accidentally got lost in tne snow. Saunders and Smith fed and shel tared the wayfarer for several days, and when tho suow disappeared the Via went on his way rejoicing, maun, apparently very grateful to his preservers. On tha 28th of July last the party were surprised by a band of two hundred Indians, supposed to be Sioux. At the. time of the surprise Smith had gone from the hut for a bucket of water, and Saunders saw no more of him from that day to this.-- ' Tbe miners, although taken completely by surprise,' made a desperate resistance in ft hand to hand conflict They had nothing but their knives to defend themselves with.
