Show THE RAINS the cause of the great anxiety in 0 california relative to the dropout crop outlook has been measurably relieved I 1 by recent showers ofrain in the northern norther apart part odthe of alio state the lom long 1 drouth the there rebas has produced the gloomiest gloo apprehensions and fears of failure if not total very extensive the past winter in the northern p part art of the golden gold en state has been 0 I 1 mild much more eo so than in other parts wild ducks and other aquatic birds remained in those quarters all the season the recent rain fall has made the I 1 people feel cheerful and hopes are now entertained that the storms will be general while all the journals of the golden state have been very naturally much exercised over the long absence of rain anine few have believed it would yet come in time I 1 to save savea a great deal of their produce both of the fields and orchards the san francisco bulletin in speaking of the present dry season says the period is one unmistakably of thirteen years thus the first dry year of which wo we have knowledge e occurred in 1850 51 inches twelve years thereafter we had bad two dry years in succession viz 1862 63 and 1863 64 yielded respectively elyas as above and 1008 inches ies A new cycle then followed in which instead I 1 of two dry seasons after twelve years wo we have one dry season in seven years that is to say 1870 71 1 1410 inches and a second six years thereafter in 1876 77 of 10 inches thero there ia is an agreement between these cycles and those observed at madras tho the time is not up for another dry year wo we should rather now be looking I 1 for tho the lone lonc cycle of thirteen years commencing with the last drought at the end of which thero there would be two dry years but that would bring us well on to 1890 in the last point of view all tho the years year s that had a rainfall in the fore part of about the same amount as this sea had a full fall after they aro are as I 1 follows J july IY I 1 jan jana 1 to jan an 1 to juno june 30 1851 52 indies inches 1046 50 59 1244 1872 73 1022 1008 1508 1886 1565 if it there is rain in the figures we think it is proved by the above investigation ti but therit will come down in the quantity or at the tile time desired is something something beyond calculation we can live a along L ong in the hope ta that riat it will come out boutall all right n but as is M well ell known hope long iong defer reil sick I 1 eneth the heart since the bulletin published the above figures the rain commenced to fall in the northern part of the state and has ims advanced southward which has been the means ing much gloomy apprehension but the fears of the people arc are not entirely removed the california alia alta in commenting of the rainfall says knowing that the need of rain has bean been very sore in all portions of california it is too soon to conclude that there has has been enough to secure a full crop at least four inches will bo be ro aired to do that in the driest part of tte the sacramento and san joaguin joaquin valleys but in localities in which the c condition ondi tion of the grain was more favorable before the rain came one or two inches will be enough to insure a harvest we were threatened with almost a total failure and the opportune occurrence of this storm has averted that calamity A full crop of wheat this year would be nearly centala cent als and it is safe now to predict that at least centala cent als or half a crop is insured in some places the winter sown and volunteer grain had doubtless taken some injury before the storm came and even with a very heavy fall of rain at this time an extra good crop in all parts of ake state is perhaps not to bo be ex pecked but if the storm continues for several days we caay may safely reck reek on oa on a crop about the same as last year or centala cent als with the good price that grain ia is expected to command the present year this I 1 would insure a prosperous season for california bat but it is not alone the grain growers who have reason to rejoice at the coming of the rain it was of almost as 8 much Import importico ateo to the hydraulic minors uto as to the tb farr farmers aers as without a larr supply of water than was I 1 I 1 wr I 1 I 1 11 I 1 y I 1 I 1 previously in sight iho tile run in the mines would have been a it wry very short one the T he fruit growers too although althou gh they already felt confident of a prosperous year have reason to be lie glad that the storm haa has come for R although though I 1 their outlook was better than that of the wheat growers it wo improbable that a lull full crop could bo be produced with so light a finhill r as we ise have had up to ho tile beginning of this rain storm experienced experience were intending to thin out the fruit more thoroughly than usual from froin a fear that the trees would not mature a full crop and they will rejoice to be relieved of that necessity dwellers in the cities have havo equal cause for congratulation with people in the coun country tri lor for not only aca their commercial prosperity depend on tho the success of tie tile agricultural interests but in sail francisco and several of tho the interior citira alao also there was danger of tile exhaustion of the tile sources of water supply for domestic purposes and for tho tile extinguishment of fires the prospective losa averted by this storm is so large as to bo be incalculable largo large crops mean ale plenty nt 3 of the staff of 1 life fc with enough enouf h to spare sa s1 3 are for exportation or exclia exchange 0 for other commodities needed in every community they recer recent it rain storms in thia this section jim have le been timely and arc are received gratefully by all classes of the people for as thea the alia ita truly observe observes the dwellers in in cities are as much inhere interested ted in these god sent showers as those who live ou on their granges gran 0 cs all are dependent upon them ns as sources of prosperity and even life last lut night the rain and hail continued to fall incessantly and the dark heavy storm clouds which hang upon the mountains arc are indications that the end is not just yet considerable more snow has been deposited in the chambers olour of our everl everlasting astin hills bills within a few fw d
