Using the number of proposals put before the Park City Planning Commission at their April 7 work session as a yardstick, optimism in the town's economic future" abounds. Plowing through an iigenda which resembled the Magna Carta in length, the commission did not make their weary exit from the Memorial Building, until the viiee hours of Thursday morning. ; ' Nielsen ; Number one on the 17-item agenda 1 was developer tywood Nielsen. Nielsen, who ' has been engaged in a running legal battle with city planners, put forther a proposal for a 72-unit 72-unit apartment project to be built on five acres of land sloping up Masonic Hill to the northcasl 6t the Utah Coal and Lumb'er restaurant. The developer, who expressed ex-pressed adesire td ooordinate his projeo with the wishes of the commission, said, "It should make that hill look a lot better tjhan it looks now." The devioper noted that he hopes to construct 16 of the units, this summer and then phase the remainder of the project by adding units in multiples of four. ' Planning Commission chairnan Burnis Watts remarked that impact on the hillside, accessibility for fire protection and city services and the proximity of a flood plane, along with other considerations, would have to he more fully investigated before any decision could be made. ' Also . discussed was Nielsen's proposed Park City Highlands subdivision to be . located on Masonic Hill. The commission asked that a preliminary study of the project be made which encompasses en-compasses the grade of the access road, its maintenance and snow removal. Working with Ligare, who is chairman of the "tree" committee, are fund raiser Jim Doilney, Merl Huseth who will be responsible for purchasing the trees, Bill McComb who will be in charge of tree distribution, publicity director Steve Dering and planting supervisor super-visor Mike ''the Sodfather" Kevitch. "By contruibuting to a general fund, people will be able to purchase trees for considerably less than they could as individuals,'' Doilney said. He also noted the tax deductions which are possible with such a civic project. t Dering, who serves on the city council, reported that he w'iH ask the council to undertake un-dertake a matching tree program whereby the city would plant one tree for every tree purchased by private citizens. . "I may be going out on a limb but I feel confident the other council members will realize the worth of this project and give their support," sup-port," Dering said. If the city accepts Dering's proposal, Doilney has set a goal of $10,000 as the total amount to be spent on trees for public and private land. Ligare emphasized the need for community support if the undertaking is to have any measure of success. "If we all get behind this we can, in a short period of time, create a visual impact that will make Park City a much nicer place to live and visit."
