Show Page 8 - Millard County Thurs April USPS 21 1988 Mrs Marilyn Nielson and Kevin Chapman West Millard Heritage Fair for the Delta South Elementary to host special program by Dawn Carder The special exhibit of over forty area photographs taken between 1880 and 1920 will be formally presented for permanent display in the Delta South Elementary School on Friday evening April 22 at 7 pm All the pictures have been framed and all have identifying plaques Marilyn Nielson and Kevin Chapman members of Delta South’s faculty were the people responsible for the project The two worked diligently and obtained a grant from the Utah Endowment for the Arts and Humanities the Thanks to their efforts photographs were collected and framed and have been hung in the halls of the school In conjunction with this activity an afternoon of events have been plann ed for the students in the school The evening events will be for all interested persons Representatives of the Utah Endowment for the Arts and Humanities from Salt Lake City will attend the program The featured of presentation will be Dr Edward scholarspeaker Leo Lyman formally of Delta Dr Lyman is currently teaching history in California and he is writing a book on Lake t the San Railroad which had a major stop in Delta enterThere will also be real tainment featured Clarence Nielson who will celebrate his 100th birthday soon will sing “Strawberry Roan” and Earl Willden will provide instrumental music Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the program OFFICER FRIENDLY speaks to kindergarten children in the classes of Mrs George and Mrs Bliss at the Delta North Elementary School His presentation was a Dippy Duck video about water out stay alive” Following the presentation each child received a the Delta The past 2 months Freestyle Club under the direction of Van Beckstrom have been practicing twice a week and wrestling in tournaments around the state on weekends In order to attend the State Freestyle at Mountain Wrestling Tournament View High School in Orem on April 8 & 9 1988 the wrestlers had to place in the top 4 at Regional to qualify These were held at Pleasant Grove Hyrum & Delta Emery on March 26 1988 qualified 28 wrestlers to advance to State The State Tournament of tough competition began and when it ended on Saturday night the Delta club Becky Tanner at Health Fair Health Fair a huge success General Safety Dental Care Water Safety Ambulance and Yard Clean Up PTA President Evelyn Warnick and Health Commissioner Karen are to be commended for their excellent organization and planning for this event Everything ran according to schedule and each of the presentors did an exceptional job in treating their particular health related topic We thank the many people who assisted with the fair and invite them to return again next year Sondra Black welcomed 1st Graders on the go with some of the 1st Craders of Delta South Elementary made their annual field trip to the old Mud Fort south of Deseret Friday April 15 A day of exploring and fun was enjoyed by all While at the fort the youngsters participated in a nail pounding contest competed in a scrub board relay game and toured the fort A picnic lunch was served to everyone BASSETT I 3 GIVAN FORD'S because It's true! Mrs Black has kept very active in her lifetime She has worked as a waitress a cook a motel maid a flaga grocery clerk ger for construction and a Lanes Supervisor at the local bowling alley When she manages to find a spare minute she enjoys hand softball swimming stitchery volleyball baking horses camping fishing riding bikes and four wheelers! Mrs Black has fond memories of Salina Elementary A few include: that rainy day in fourth grade when a group of students hid in the coat closet so they wouldn’t have to go outside for then got locked in! There was also the time in fifth grade when again the group stayed in for recess and after the teacher left the room they had a jumping contest One girl jumped the highest and knocked the clock off the wall It was swinging by the cord m the doorway when in walked the teacher-Ball the students were then in their seats working quietly! Speaking of early morning swimming the pool will be opening its doors at 5:30 am Monday through Friday on a trial basis to help eliminaie the 6:00 am swimming congestion The pool management is glad to see people using the pool and tries to make the pool enjoyable for everyone Ladies don’t despair New curtains in the women’s dressing room are on order and will be here soon Sorry for the inconvenience There will be one more winter swimming lesson session Session 10 at the West Millard Pool lor this season which will begin Monday May 9 Toni Harris will be teaching the tiny tots in the mornings and Cindy Manning will be teaching the school age children after school The pool’s summer “Learn to Swim” swim lesson program will begin Tuesday the day after May 31 Memorial Day Registrations are now being taken for winter Session 10 by calling the pool at Starting Monday May 2 the pool will begin taking registrations for the summer lessons swimming A WSI (Water Safety Instructor) course will be given at the pool June 17 18 24 and 25 Phil Murray from Snow College will be the instructor This course is offered once a year at the West Millard Pool To qualify for the WSI course a person must be at least 17 years of age and a currently certified American Red Cross lifeguard |
