Show Millard Count) XI “Fillmore" j By Stella Day We some of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers believe that Nathaniel Baldwin was one of the most talented inventors of his time but because he got mixed up with some businessmen who took advantage of Nathaniel's lack of business training Nathaniel was sent to jail and died a poor man This letter from Nathaniel was written to me when I was busy gathering my part of the material for the book “Milestones of Millard” Nathaniel went to school in Fillmore and invented his own bicycle to ride to school and home again He attended the Brigham Young Univerat that later taught sity and formed a business but the business failed corporation as Nathaniel did not know enough about financing a business Had Nathaniel gone into business with real businessmen he would have become a rich inventor but instead he went broke trying to run a business Had he been a businesshe would man have been a millionaire he had so many excellent inventions We will now finish copying the rest of Nathaniel’s letter which I received from him and printed in "Milestones of Millard” “Dear Daughters of the Pioneers The company we had organized was we did not doing well However patent the ear phones and some of the other inventions and other companies took over the very things which I invented Because of my poof judgement in choosing business we went into bankruptcy associates in 1929 during the depic sion Just before we failed in business some stock was sold in Montana with the the business hope of enlarging claimed we sold Some investors stock which was worthless and 15 of us were arraigned in court and sent to a federal prison I spent one year and one month in jail The main reason we had to go to jail was that we failed to keep the business we with the equipment had while others got ahead of us Since the with our own inventions close of the business it has been one long financial drag with neither the money to start a new business nor to have made complete inventions lately Some of these I feel would be equal to or even greater than the ear phones if just had the money to manufacture them “Thanks to the Daughters of the Pioneers for their interest in me I wish you success in your publishing Nathanprojects With appreciation iel Baldwin” We wish we could have helped some of his Nathaniel develop but of course it is too inventions 18 1984 -
