It was about p this time that my instincts kicked into gear, forming the message: These kids don't seem to be having fun. We stopped and quickly organized another game: Follow the Leader. We took turns being the Leader, being in charge, being silly. No one cried. I don't know how the land was allocated, either by choice or by lot. When a portion of land was assigned it was necessary for that person to "prove up" on the claim. To gain title it was obligatory to fence the property, dig a well, and pump water down a ditch. The committee consisting of three members administer farm programs such as commodity price support loans and conservation programs, payments, indemnity and disaster payments, crop insurance and farm ownership and operating loans on a county basis. They also hire a County Executive Director to y FSA county office supervise ' operations. "The committee represent the various types of fanning and agricultural regions in the county they serve, Gbckman said. Cultural diversity of the area, women, b.B age groups and variations in farm income are reflected in committee makeup." Nationwide elections tor new committee members at this time is necessary because of the extensive reorganization of the U.S. Department of the Clinton Agriculture by Administration. The new Farm Service Agency has been created combining duties and responsibilities previously carried out individually by ' the Stabilization and Agricultural Conservation Service (ASCS), Farmers Home Administration (FmHA), and Federal Crop Insurance Corporation My Dad said that many owners had secured their land before him, but that he planted the first crops, wheat and potatoes. I do not know what year this could have been, for when we moved to the farm in 1919 there were many farms throughout the valley. Ours was planted in alfalfa. The house and other buildings were already built. What a beautiful valley it was in those days! The Beaver River ran through it, and there were many trees and swimming holes. Lots of grass covered the area, and there were fish in the streams. In the unfarmed areas the sage grew so tall that even when on my pony I couldn't see over their tops. Evidence of the rich fertile soil was apparent throughout the valley. The residents were just one large family. If one was sick or unable to do his work, other men would come to harvest his crops or do whatever needed to be done. I remember Mr. Cates. He managed the Utah State Experimental Farm, with the two-stor- y farm house on Highway 4 miles south of Milford. His new home, which was being build of adobe, was located at the intersection of East about 21, Valley Road and Cates Road. . Men in their slack time would help mix the clay and straw, put it in the molds and allow it to bake in the hot sun. When the walls were erected they were trimmed, smoothed and then stuccoed. Election ballots will be mailed by the County FSA Office to all eligible producers by November 24th and must be received by the county office no later than December 4th to be counted. It is now known &s the Barnes Family Home. A mile west of Cook's farm was Hay Springs. In the winter it's round, smooth ponds made perfect skating ponds. Folks would go there, build huge bonfires of sagebrush and skate far into the night. The water from Hay Springs flowed northward until it met the waters from Tadpole Springs, 3 to 4 miles south of Milford. The stream then turned east to join the Beaver River. It was said that you could skate the ten miles from Hay Springs to Milford without touching the ground. In the mid 1920's a boarding house at Newhouse was purchased. Elam Fouts brought it down in two sections. After a bit of remodeling, it was the scene of many parties, dances and socials. The women of the valley, who were always looking for ways to entertain, had a place for their "South Milford Social Club." Growing up in this valley seemed to be a form of heaven. But it could be hazardous to your health especially if had two older brothers, as I had. How could I forget the cold, frosty morning when you my brothers talked me into sticking my tongue on the anvil in Dad's blacksmith shop. My lips must not have been stuck because my mother heard my screams, came out and raised Cain. She made them carry hot water from the reservoir on the kitchen stove to pour over the anvil until it was warm enough to remove my tongue. Then there was the "dirty trick" that I fell for more than once. They would find a fresh cow patty in the yard and sprinkle it with dust to hid its identity. Then they would call me to watch while they took wonderful things from their overall pockets and put them on top. They covered it with a hat, and told me, "You can have everything that you can grab." When I made the dive, there was never anything there, and I always got a handful of "yuck." Need Cash for Fall and i'.f.t i1; 'tot rebmpetitiori"r ' "Where someone to win, someone nas to lose.
