My resignation actually came about because of the success of the Western States Coalition. We (the Western States Coalition) have now grown to over 3,000 members, mostly legislators, county and city officials, as well as stake holders. We represent over 25 million western Americans, mostly in the rural areas of the western states. It has been increasingly difficult this past year doing what I feel obligated to do as a legislator within my district in Washington County' and continue to spearhead the activities of the Western States Coalition to try to and Jerry Bcitz celebrated his 87th birthday September 30th. Ilo-llu- impact Washington, DC, Congress, and the bureaucracies in such a way as to protect the environment and also have a stable economy in the rural west. It is extremely important to me to try to get local government a bigger voice so that the "one size fits all" type of government that is making failed public policy at the present time, is replaced by having communities, counties, and states have a bigger say in the policies that impact them so greatly. There are several issues presently that are taking 100 of my time. Such as, the revision of the Endangered Species Act, turning the BLM lands back to the states, and other natural resource issues that seem to be either misunderstood andor wrongly promoted to the detriment of local, county, and state government Lana and I are engaging in a business in Wyoming that will take us out of the state for a minimum of three or four months each vear. I hope this helps explain the reason for my resignation in the fact that I really haven't resigned from public service, I've just taken on a much larger task over a much broaderarea that will include a tremendous amount of travel. That schedule and time commitment simply cannot be compromised if we are going to make a difference, and, of course, that type of schedule would make it nearly impossible for me to justly serve all of the other issues that impact a legislative district. I'm confident that whoever takes my place will have the same values that I hold dearly and will probably express them a little more politely than I have in the past, which has gained me somewhat of an outspoken image, but the people that I represented, I think, at the time, needed someone to be outspoken and I didn't mind the criticism became I value the friendship and the integrity of the people that I represented more than I minded the criticism that I got from and the radical media the environmental community'. So I hope this letter from me does explain further my intentions, and my future, and my ambitions to serve the West in a positive and influential way. Thank You, Sincerely, Met Johnson.
