H Stockton has ben the noenu or lm- j portant mining, operations durlnu the H your. Tho driving of the Honorlno drain H , tunnel U a notable achievement and j history will record Is as the beginning m of a new era In the camp's existence. H In tho past too much water has been H a dleturblng clement and hae been the H moans of rotardlng tho deve) rment H and growth of tho district. Although H many attempts were made to operato H below tho ivnter level of the catnp, they K all proved falluref, the cost In most H cases being too great. Tho Honorlno H Mines company went to big expense in H tho Installation of powerful pumps and B inudu fair procrosc, but whlla it wan H freeing lta own properties It was alto H unwatcrlng Its neighbor's mines and H' tho latter bora no portion of tho ex- S peuso. The Honerine company had H been pumping at tho rato of about 1000 r gallons per minute and continued in mumMvuimu ' nr"iiii(iBriiiii operation long enough to determine that the sulphide ore bodies below wore worth going after. WOULD NOT JOIN IN. The other mine-owners were prevailed pre-vailed upon to Join In tho pumping operations, but none seemed Willing to do this. The result was tho Honerine plnnt was closed down, the pumps withdrawn and for a time It looked aH If the camp would remain Indefinitely dend. TUNNEL SCHEME DEVISED. Hut shortly nfter the shut-down, Just nbout a year ago, the Honerine tunnel scheme wns devised. In this enterprise the mine-owners appeared to agree and the managers of the principal properties proper-ties Joined In the organization of the Honerine Tunnel company. Sufficient funds wee raised to guarantee the success suc-cess of the ontcrprlw, and the great work wns begun during the present year. When completed the tunnel will ho nbout S0OO feet In length, nnd will penetrate many of tho ledges which have yielded so generously nhove the water line. A little over 6000 feet of tho tunnel has been run nnd It has already drained tunny of tho workings which were filled with water n few weeks ago. HESEUVOIIl TAPPED. A great porphyry formation seemed to lock tho water within the mineral zone, thus apparently forming n great reservoir. When the tunnel cut through this porphyry a few weeks ngo the reservoir res-ervoir was tapped and the wntcr sought an outlet through the tunnel In torrents; tor-rents; for dnys tho stream was running at the rate of from 3000 to 5000 gallons per minute. With this event tho success suc-cess of tho tunnel wns asmired and preparations were begun to resume operations In some of the mines thnt hnd been Idle. i WAS IN GOOD HANDS. The work or driving the grent tunnel has been In competent hnnds; under the superintendent of E. J. Raddatz, while the general supervision has been directed by Wllllnrd F. Snyder, general gen-eral mnnnger of the Western Exploration Explora-tion company, nn organization closely nllled to the tunnel compnny nnd the Honerine mine. The undertaking was a stupendous nnd expensive one. The tunnel hns cost nbout a quarter of a million dollnrs. DIG REDUCTION WORKS. In tho menntlme preparations went ahead for the building of a grent reduction re-duction works nt the mouth of the tunnel, tun-nel, near the old station or TermlnuB. TOWN OF HUIIL. Hero nlso the townslte or Buhl was laid out, and It Is likely to become one or the most Important stntlons on the mnln line or the San Pedro. Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad. The Honerine compnny has now under construction n concentrating mill or 500 tons' cnpnclty, which will go Into commission early In the coming year. The ores will come through, the tunnel, which will serve ns the nvenue or exit for the mines along Its pnthway. The plant will probnbly be Increased to several thousandw of tons dally capacity when the development develop-ment of the properties through the tunnel tun-nel progresses further. WAITED FOR TUNNEL. Stockton, pending the construction and completion or the big bore, has been quiet; rew properties have been In operation. At the Stockton mine, however, how-ever, development work has been pushed ahead, and some lnrge bodies or milling orcH have been opened. The product will probably be treated at the now mill nt the mouth or tho tunnel until un-til the time comes for the compnny to provide Its own fncllltlcs. Tho Honerine tunnel Is of almost Incalculable In-calculable benefit to the camp or Stockton, Stock-ton, and It means tho development of the district upon the broad scale or HInghnm, Pnrk City and other places. It means that tho tonnnges to bo handled han-dled next year will surpass previous records from Stockton; thnt not only Htlvcr nnd lend, but copper will piny an Importnnt part In the production.
