Mrs. Steffen has just completed a comprehensive study of the economic costs of the 1983 and 1984 flooding to Utah. A major burden, she says, could result from the Thistle landslide, which put the Marysvale Branch out of service. By the end of 1985, 1,031 people could be out of work because of the closure, she estimates, and by the year 2000 there will be 1,223 fewer jobs in the area if the railroad line isn't rehabilitated. Thats partly because the closure is not only adversely affecting coal mining now underway in the area but could prevent some projected mine developments from happening. . Allen Fawcett, director of the economic development for the Organization, doesnt think the economic loss to mining is quite that high. In a report to the Sanpete-Sevie- r Railroad Task Force, organized to get the branch line back in service, he estimated the overall job loss in the area, because of the closure at 200 and an eventual job loss of 650 if the branch isn't rehabilitated. his report he said that Consolidated Coal Co. has had to go out of business, that Sunbeam Mine will lose around $146,000 in sales and that it is costing Southern Utah Fuel Co., with mines in Salina Canyon, an additional $400,000 a year because its coal now has to be shipped out by truck instead of by In rail. The flooding brought some benefits, Mrs. Steffens study says, including a $175 million influx of federal money and some improvements to facilities, like roads and bridges, but the overall loss far outweighs the gains. Pat Mellor Imitation Cabbage-Patc- h dolls currently on the market in every town in Sanpete are not illegal until they hurt somebody, says Sanpete County Deputy Wallace Buchanan. Deputy Buchanan says some of the dolls smell strongly of kerosene and one that he ignited went up in flames fast, but according to advice he had received from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Agriculture and other federal agencies which first issued the alert about the dolls, only U.S. Customs officials may confiscate the fakes. v Patch (tm) dolls, which sell for about in Utah at present. The real things are in short supply and their prices put them out of the range of many Sanpete families, which is one of the reasons the imitations have been so popular in the area.
