Show RHETOflIC .WMHCfS WASUINGTON, Jy 28.Repub-Jllcan 28.Repub-Jllcan Publicity association through ,itowpres(dent, Hon. Jonathan Bourno Jr. today gave out tho following statement from its Washington headquarters: head-quarters: "Kej;cd up to a high pitch of Interest Inter-est at the prospect of receiving nt last from the hand ot the President some concrete facts In support of the peace treaty and some tangible reasons rea-sons why tho United States should forcsakq Us traditional policies and adopt tho leaguo covenant, tho people have sunk back onco more into their habitual condition ot hopelessness ot ever l&arlng from tho President a single definite unequivocal statement of our foreign policy of tho future. Like all of his previous addresses drilling with tho league and treaty, Mr. Wilson's speech to tho senate was utterly devoid ot anything in the nature ot specific argument. Ills remarks re-marks were merely a flow of beautiful beauti-ful language, a collection ot empty I platitudes nnd a monotonous repltl-tlon repltl-tlon of the WilsonUin conception ot America's duty toward humanity. "Mr. Wllbon began his speech by clothing In new words his frequently emphaslz,ed declaration that we did not go to war becauso of anything that concerned the United States par-I par-I tlcularly, but that our victorious army ar-my was inspired by its-loye for humanity hu-manity in general. His closing remarks re-marks practically asserted that he. was tho agent of Divinity" In framing tho league ot nations and regulating tho future of the world. The stago Is set,' he declared, 'the destlng disclosed. dis-closed. It has come about by no plan ot our conceiving but my the hand df 'God who led us into this way.' In the Declaration of Independence the forefathers proclaimed that we had been endowed by our Creator with liberty. Can It be that that same Creator purposes now to use Mr. Wit-son Wit-son as Ills agency in depriving us or that liberty? ' "So tnsltent lu the President on Impressing upon his countrymen his conception of what brought us Into the war that he repeated again and again throughout this remarkable address ad-dress that It was the woes of humanity human-ity that goaded us to fight and distinctly dis-tinctly repudiated the Idea that German Ger-man aggression upon tho United States had anything to do with it. 'We entered it' ho said, 'not becauso our material Interests were directly threatened.' And again, 'Wo entered tho war as tho disinterestedness Cham plons of right and we interested ourselves our-selves In tho terms of peace in no other capacity.' And yot again, 'It was universally recognized that America Am-erica had entered tho war to promote no private or peculiar Interest of her own but only us tho champion ot rights which she was glad to share with free men and lovers of Justice everywhere.' Where Is the American Ameri-can whose blood does not boll at such statements, bad enough when coming from tho ordinary citizen, but far worse when uttered by the man whom our constitution placed nt tho head of our armies? "And a touch of amusement was not lacking. When the Prosldont soberly so-berly romarked that 'You havo boon dally cognizant ot what was going on theio of til0 pioblems with which tho peaco conference had to deal,' It was hard for his hearers to repress their ismlles when thoyro-momboied thoyro-momboied the complete censorship that denied senators knowledgo of the treaty, although copies, oflt were In tho hands ot tho Prosldont'a personal per-sonal friends in Wnll streot weeks bo-foro. bo-foro. Token as n,wholo tho speech was a huge disappointment, but In that respect re-spect proclly llek all tho othor utterances ut-terances or Mr. Wilson. It the utter lack of nry doflnilo Information con veyed in It .', an indication of tho character of his remark's on his tour of the country tho people have In store for them a free courso In English Eng-lish rhetoric, but ot tho league ot nations na-tions and its effect upon America they will learn nothing. It remains for the Senate to enlighten them on that subject." |
