PAGE FIVE. 934. 1 i W tJ bu Genealogical and Temple News POVNfe, GENEALOGISTS WRITE LETTERS No Set Rules In Gathering (Editorial) There are just two ways to find genealogical information. One is to go after it personally, to go in person to seek the records, to go in person to search the books in the various libraries, to go in person to visit the cemeteries and the churches, the county recodders offices, and the state the county recorders offices, and the state dollars is very soon gone and much time. is consumed in travel and waiting for opportunities to see thosj? whom we would consult. , , The other method is to write letters to those who, you think, can furnish you the information. This method has many advantages. When you write letters you can conduct your search on many' battle fronts at the same time. In one day you may write letters asking for information Ar directing others to do research work for you in several states in the United States and in several countries of Europe. We suggest to our readers that they use the letter writ: ing method consistently and continuously. You should always be looking for a letter in answer to a letter you have written regarding your ancestors. In this department we attempt to assist those who would write letters. Every week there is an index to the names in the Boston Transcript genealogical section. Those who watch this index will often find an opportunity to write a letter to someone who is working on the same line of genealogical research. Every week there is a list of names of genealogies now in course of compilation and here again is an opportunity to write to the compilers of these genealogies. Hundreds of those who have taken advantage of the help we have offered in this department have been successful in finding some of their records. Hundreds of others who pretend to be interested in genealogical research could have found more of their records if hey had been more faithful in following the clues to be found in this department by writing more letters. A three cent letter will often bring results just as good as a fifty dollar journey. Genealogy There is no one general way by which people may obtain their Many conditions engenealogy. ter into the consideration of this Among these important work. are tha amount of information you already have and the country from which your people originally came. If your people are from England, then we must know from what shire (County) and if possible from what parish in the shire, otherwise we will not know where to begin the search. If they are from ths New England states, we must also know from what part they came. Of course if you are fortunate to have had someone of your family gather and compile and print family genealogy, we can usually tell you of that fact and perhaps put you in the way of getting a copy, if it is to be had. The great bulk of our books ure from England and the eastern part of the United States. With mentioned at the information hand, we can by a little examination, determine If there is likelihood of finding many of our names in our books. If your family is from one of countries, we the Scandinavian cannot offer you much in the of printed records, as there way is very little genealogy published in those countries, and of course, we cannot get possession of records other than those which are printed and for sale. Your recourse, therefore would be to to the original records in the old country from whence your people came; and someone would be required to visit these records, inspect them, and copy from them those names which belong to your family.
